Program Educational Objectives for Mathematics Majors

Upon graduation you should:

  1. Have the skills needed to pursue careers in education, business, and/or industry.
  2. Be prepared for continued study of mathematics or statistics at the graduate level.
  3. Experience mathematics outside of your regular course work.

Student Outcomes for Mathematics Majors

Upon completion of the Mathematics program, you should be able to:

  1. Communicate mathematics effectively.
  2. Demonstrate a computational ability in solving a wide array of mathematical problems.
  3. Differentiate between valid and invalid mathematical reasoning.
  4. Develop mathematical ideas from basic axioms.
  5. Utilize mathematics to solve theoretical and applied problems.
  6. Identify applications of mathematics in other disciplines and in society.

Student Outcomes for Mathematics in Secondary Education Majors

Upon completion of the Mathematics in Secondary Education program, you should be able to:

  1. Understand basic geometric concepts and proofs.
  2. Communicate mathematics effectively using various instructional strategies.
  3. Effectively assess student work and use that assessment to design activities incorporating a variety of instructional resources.
  4. Be familiar with the different philosophies of various high school curricula and be open to the use of any curriculum in the motivating and teaching of mathematics to students.
  5. Appreciate the value of professional development and being familiar with the various organizations concerned with mathematics education.
  6. Be aware of the role of the teacher in the community.
