Encouraging exploration and design, UiS is one of the leading research facilities into improved fish farming in Norway. Currently the university admits about 400 international students from over 40 countries annually. They are committed to advancing science and developing leaders in the engineering and scientific fields.
Situated in Southern Norway, Stavanger is a thriving harbor city surrounded by beautiful beaches and mountains. Because of the warm Golf Stream, southern Norway has a milder temperature than many students think. The Stavanger area is very similar to Wisconsin and Minnesota in terms of temperature. The geography ranges from flat beaches to towing mountains. Stavanger itself is the oil and energy capital of Europe. Around 18% of Stavanger inhabitants have a foreign background, placing UiS in a strong international community. English is taught to school children, and many Norwegians also speak German, French or Spanish as their third language. As an international student, students may find many Norwegians will want to practice their English with them.
