Leading a STFL Program
Proposal Submission Deadline: May 1
The UW-Platteville Education Abroad Office looks forward to assisting faculty and staff in what will be a richly rewarding opportunity for not only the professional development of faculty and staff, but also the academic development of UW-Platteville students.
Faculty and academic staff interested in leading a credit-bearing STFL program must submit a detailed proposal for review by May 1 for any program they plan to offer during Winterim, Spring Break or Summer of the following academic year.
A Short-Term Faculty-Led (STFL) Program is:
✔ Faculty-directed study abroad
✔ Sponsored by UW-Platteville
✔ Credit-bearing (1-3 cr.)
✔ 1-8 weeks in duration
✔ During winterim, summer, or embedded in the semester (spring break)
✔ Financed on a cost recovery basis – students are assessed a fee to cover costs and are exempt from paying UW-Platteville tuition and fees, see UW System Administrative Policy 810.
By leading a short-term faculty-led (STFL) study abroad program, UW-Platteville faculty and staff not only contribute to the internationalization of the UW-Platteville campus, but also provide our students with a broad range of affordable study abroad options. They offer students the opportunity to participate in a program sponsored by their own university, travel and study with friends and faculty they know and trust, and earn credit that will be applied toward their degree requirements.
Any faculty or academic teaching staff may lead a STFL program. Faculty wishing to teach a STFL program during spring break may be eligible to include the STFL course in their spring semester teaching load. Non-teaching academic staff can co-lead an STFL program with a faculty member or teaching academic staff member; however, non-teaching academic staff on 12-month appointments must first receive approval to go on leave (with no stipend for leading the STFL program) from their department head or supervisor. If the non-teaching academic staff member is requesting unpaid leave during the time he/she will be leading or co-leading the STFL program, the employee would need to contact HR to make arrangements for unpaid leave.
