Course Name:Sustainability in Engineering Design and Manufacturing (Online)
Course Description:This course explores the engineering management systems and design frameworks necessary to understand the interrelated issues of environmental quality, sustainability principles, engineering best practices, and emerging manufacturing technologies. The engineering viewpoint of sustainability starts with the systems engineering life-cycle process and includes the systems design evaluation processes for producibility, maintainability, disposability, and life-cycle costing. Key supporting engineering management processes include trade-off studies and risk-based decision making.

Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
    • Summarize the tactics, processes, procedures, and "best practices" for sustainable engineering as defined by professional organizations like the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), U.S. EPA, National Research Council (NRC), National Renewable Energy laboratory (NREL), International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), U.N. Division of Sustainable Development (UNDSD), and so on.
    • Apprise the "big picture" of product and systems design in order to develop systems that are socially useful, politically acceptable, technologically sound, and environmentally safe.
    • Explain the importance of the technical and management processes involved with sustainable engineering and how they relate/interact with each other.
    • Defend the factors that can weigh in on a system's development aren't purely technical, schedule, or cost-related.
    • Supports the needed to balance the engineering aims for technical optimization with the need for client satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and the business sustainability goals.
    • Explain in detail a system's life cycle from requirements development, to design and implementation, to testing and evaluation, fielding and support, and, finally, disposaland the methods and tools recommended for each of these phases.
    • Supports the important components of sustainable engineering: the technical processes (i.e., logical analysis, design solution, integration, validation, etc.) and the technical management processes (risk management, configuration management, etc.) that go along with them.
