Unit Descriptions

Unit 1
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Explain why good communications skills are vital in today’s workplace.
  • Describe the variety of and differences between the many ways we communicate.
  • Discuss the importance of ethics, morals, and abiding by the law in your communications.
  • Plan a successful business meeting and use Robert’s Rules of Order.
  • Explain the importance of presenting a professional image in the workplace.
  • Describe the impact culture and diversity have on communication.

Unit 2
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Propose a thesis statement and plan how you will research and complete the assigned academic paper.
  • Utilize the Karrmann Library for this course and other courses as you complete your degree from UW-Platteville.
  • Select credible sources for research papers and reports.
  • Present your findings in an academic writing style with proper citations.
  • Describe plagiarism and how to avoid it.

Unit 3
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Analyze your audience, write a message, and choose the medium for delivery.
  • Apply Guffey and Lowey’s 3 x 3 writing process to your communications.
  • Write concise messages by revising to make every word count.
  • Use headings, bullets, and other formatting tools to enhance the clarity and presentation of your message.
  • Apply proofreading techniques to increase your accuracy.

Unit 4
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Identify a variety of communication tools and determine the best tool for the message you need to deliver.
  • Determine what type of message you need to deliver and use the appropriate format for your written message.
  • Deliver positive messages expertly and negative messages with ease while presenting a persuasive argument.
  • Develop an appropriate response to a claim.

Unit 5
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Prepare and organize data for informal business reports.
  • Research and write formal business proposals.
  • Organize and present to various parties.
  • Determine the similarities and differences between business reports and academic reports.

Unit 6
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Perform a job search and apply for a position of your choosing.
  • Prepare for the interview process.
  • Create appropriate job-related correspondence, including a cover letter, resume, and thank you letter.
