UW-Platteville Online announces Ruth Miller Distance Education Challenge Scholarship
The UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center is proud to announce that Ruth Miller, one of the University’s first Distance Education graduates, has created the Ruth Miller Distance Education Challenge Scholarship. Miller completed her Business Administration degree in 1982, and the scholarship will assist Business Administration distance students in completing their education. It is her wish to help students finish their degree in the same manner in which she finished hers.
In spring 2016, two scholarships of $750 will be awarded to Business Administration distance students. One annual scholarship will be awarded in future years. To be considered, applicants must be a new transfer student to the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center with at least 30 credits and 3.0 GPA or higher.
Miller, who was a single working parent while she completed her degree, created the scholarship to help students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree while balancing other aspects of life such as parenthood, financial challenges, and careers. As part of the application process, students will submit an essay addressing the challenges they face in obtaining a degree.
She has remained close to her alma mater and believes that more students would flourish by taking classes through distance learning, which is part of the reason she is challenging others to give to scholarships.
“Providing support for current students and programs is a great way for us to continue sharing the results of our education,” she said.
Dawn Drake, Executive Director of Alternative Delivery Systems at UW-Platteville, helped to foster the continued relationship with Miller and is looking forward to giving students another stepping stone to degree completion.
“I'm so thrilled that Ruth has developed this Distance Education Challenge Scholarship. Her life is a prime example of the positive impact education can have for non-traditional students who are diligent in their educational pursuits. I've known Ruth for many years and she's truly an inspiration. Her interest in giving back to help others pursue their education is a true testament to her ongoing commitment and dedication,” Drake said.
The scholarship application due date is February 15, 2016. Additional information on scholarship details, including criteria and application instructions, will be available at www.GoUWP.com/challenge.
