UW-Platteville Center for Distance Learning celebrates 40th anniversary
On Wednesday, November 7, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Center for Distance Learning community will host an open event commemorating its 40th anniversary. This event, dubbed “40 and Forward,” takes place during National Distance Learning Week.
The 40 and Forward gala will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Nohr Gallery located in Ullsvik Hall on the UW-Platteville campus. All are welcome to attend and enjoy presentations from:
- Chancellor Dennis J. Shields
- Retired Executive Director of Alternative Delivery Systems, Dawn Drake
- Dean of the Division of Professional Studies, Dr. Craig Wilson
- Center for Distance Learning Director, Dan Avenarius
- Virtual Reality Learning Experience Team
The evening will conclude with a discussion of the future of distance education.
“If you’re looking for programs for professional and personal growth, there’s no better place to go than right here at our University,” Dr. Wilson said. “The 40th anniversary gala will celebrate how UW-Platteville has helped people in our community and beyond achieve their goals while sharing our aspirations to do even more in the next 40 years.
UW-Platteville was the first public university in Wisconsin to offer degrees entirely online, and has been a leader in the field ever since. Now offering a variety of masters and bachelors online degree programs, the institution continues to explore educational opportunities in the fields that students and the changing global economy demand.
"Education is truly the great equalizer in our world and can help us all achieve great things, both individually and as a society,” Dawn Drake, former executive director of Alternative Delivery Systems, said. “It has been great to watch the growth of the programs over the years and all the people’s lives that have been touched through these programs.”
With 40 years of history to build on, Dr. Wilson and the Center for Distance Learning staff are now exploring future opportunities to push the boundaries of the learning experience, opening new realms of possibility for faculty and learners.
