This spring, the Distance Education Alumni Board introduced a new scholarship in its name, which awards two $300 scholarships each year to distance education students. The scholarship was created to provide additional financial support to distance students and is funded by UW-Platteville Alumni Association memberships. The Alumni Board is a chapter of the association and receives a portion of each distance alumnus’ membership to support its students and alumni.

Alumni Board President Jill Bisco, Vice President Joe Roy, and Secretary Beth Bland selected the first recipients of the award: Doug Nofsinger and Jayson Johnson.

“The Distance Education Alumni Board Scholarship was created as a way to help support existing distance students with the ongoing costs associated with obtaining their degree,” Bisco said. “As the board is made up of distance education alums, it was important for us to give back to the program that allowed us to succeed.”

Doug Nofsinger is an undergraduate student in the business administration program, who has been taking courses through the Distance Learning Center off and on since 1993 whenever he had available time. Although he has already held several high-level positions at large companies, he still wants to complete his degree. Nofsinger is a Sourcing Manager at Colony Brands, Inc., in Monroe, Wisconsin.

Jayson Johnson enrolled in the Master of Science in Organizational Changer Leadership program in the spring of 2014. He is a Professional Project Manager at John Deere in Moline, Illinois. For his capstone project, he worked at Gigi’s Down Syndrome Achievement Center, helping to find ways to effectively plan and implement change.

The scholarship is awarded to degree-seeking students enrolled in a distance education program who have completed at least one distance course and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Additionally, recipients must demonstrate a desire for staying engaged as alumni once they have graduated. The Distance Education Alumni Board Scholarship is one of four scholarships available exclusively for distance education students. For more information on these and other scholarships, click here.
