Know your FERPA rights

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), there are rules and regulations in place regarding the release and access of student information. While UW-Platteville generally will not release student record information, we do publish a student directory. The student directory includes student names, addresses, phone numbers, campus email addresses, and other information.

Because our directory is public information, there have been instances where a student received a phone call or email message from an untrustworthy source. On occasion, students have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be with the IRS, FBI, and other organizations requesting private information. Students are encouraged to use their best judgment when they receive requests for information, and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • NEVER disclose your birth date, social security number, or other private information to an unknown source.
  • If you suspect you are being contacted by an untrustworthy source, ask to speak to the person’s supervisor or ask for other means of verification.

Students may choose to have themselves removed from the student directory by requesting a privacy hold from the Office of the Registrar. However, it should be noted that a privacy hold will deny requests for information from all outside sources, including parents, friends, prospective employers, and others who may truly need the information.
