The University of Wisconsin-Platteville places the safety and well-being of students, employees and the public at the top of its priorities. Education, training, testing emergency procedures and crime prevention techniques are UW-Platteville's first priority and includes observation, awareness, risk assessment, planning, and reporting.

In the case of an emergency, dial 911. If you are ever in doubt about a situation being an emergency, it is better to treat it as an emergency! Cell phones can be a valuable asset in an emergency, but there is a possibility that the call is received by an agency outside of your geographical area. You must be prepared to provide as much information as possible, including detailed description of your location.

Assisting persons with disabilities

Students, staff, and faculty with disabilities are vulnerable, like all members of the campus community, to the various disasters and emergencies that might affect the UW-Platteville campus. To mitigate these vulnerabilities, individuals with disabilities should take additional steps to prepare themselves.

Emergency Exercises

Throughout every academic year, University of Wisconsin-Platteville checks its emergency response plan and alarms through system tests, tabletop exercises, functional drills, and full-scale exercises.

Types of emergency exercises

Systems

The UW-Platteville, on a regular basis, tests the functionality of its fire alarm system, smoke/fire detectors, emergency call boxes, tornado alert system, Pioneer text alert system, 911 emergency phones, and the City of Platteville outdoor siren system.

Tabletop exercise

Members of the campus review and discuss actions they would take in a particular emergency, testing their emergency plan in an informal, low-stress environment. Tabletop exercises are used to clarify roles and responsibilities and to identify additional campus mitigation and preparedness needs.

Functional exercise

This simulates an emergency in the most realistic manner possible, short of moving resources to an actual site. The exercise is conducted in a real-time environment test and evaluates the capability of UW-Platteville to respond to an emergency using a simulated event.

Full-scale exercise

This combines the interactivity of the functional exercise with the field element. The exercise is useful to test total coordination among policymakers, coordination officials, and field forces.
