UW System’s two parallel Water Initiatives
• Freshwater University initiative – Spearheaded by UW-Milwaukee
• Collaborative research project supporting faculty and student research focused on water issues in Wisconsin - 0.5M, A team led by Dr. Brian Sloss of UW-Stevens Point
UW-Milwaukee is spearheading a system-wide collaboration to offer a “university” dedicated to water amongst all institutions. This pertains to ALL things water from fluid dynamics to limnology, from wetlands to stormwater infrastructure, from groundwater to nutrient dynamics, from irrigation to social/economic issues…basically everything. The premise is to take advantage of the vast expertise in water within the System and put Wisconsin on the map as THE place for students to study water (undergrads and grads). They are also hopeful that this will spawn more collaboration among faculty and institutions.
Collaborative Research Project
After receiving a thoughtful proposal from the team led by Dr. Brian Sloss of UW-Stevens Point, Jim Henderson (VC,UW-system) announced the allocation of $500,000 to fund a collaborative research project supporting faculty and student research focused on water issues in Wisconsin. This project is modeled based on a Cal State System research collaborative effort, and has a direct focus on research work of faculty and students at the comprehensive campuses and Colleges. Dr. Sloss has been tasked with leading the development group in setting up this research collaborative.
