Major and Minor Requirements
Philosophy majors and minors from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville are now employed in many professions, as there is always a demand for able and thoughtful people.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students who major or minor in philosophy will:
- Acquire a broad understanding of the history of Western philosophy
- Become more ethically sensitive through the careful study of various ethical theories
- Enhance their ability to analyze and clarify ideas
- Refine their ability to think logically
- Demonstrate their ability to present their ideas and arguments effectively, both orally and in writing
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Arts Degree
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree, 120 credits are required, including 44-58 general education credits and 36 credits in your major.
Philosophy majors, in addition to the requirements for the major, are also required to include one of the following in their general education credits:
- French 2140
- German 2340
- Spanish 2940
Majors in philosophy are also required to take two English literature courses at the 2000 level or above.
Philosophy Major
The major requires a minimum of 36 credits, including:
- PHLSPHY 1130 Introduction to Philosophy or PHLSPHY 2230 Contemporary Worldviews,
- PHLSPHY 2330 Origins of Western Philosophy
- PHLSPHY 2430 Philosophy in the Modern World
- PHILSPHY 2630 Logic
- Four 3000-level seminars
- Two 4000-level seminars
Religious studies courses and PHLSPHY 4330 Philosophy of Education may not be taken for credit toward a major in philosophy.
Philosophy Minor
The minor requires a minimum of 24 credits, including:
- PHLSPHY 1130 Introduction to Philosophy or PHLSPHY 2230 Contemporary Worldviews
- PHLSPHY 2330 Origins of Western Philosophy
- PHLSPHY 2430 Philosophy in the Modern World
- PHILSPHY 2630 Logic
- Two 3000-level seminars
- One 4000-level seminars
Religious studies courses and PHLSPHY 4330 Philosophy of Education may not be taken for credit toward a minor in philosophy.
