Jazz I is the flagship ensemble for the UW-Platteville jazz department. The group has been in existence since 1965 and is composed of music and non-music majors. Jazz I, in coordination with our UWP Jazz Festival, has performed with such noted artists as Maria Schneider, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Wycliff Gordon, Marvin Stamm, Clark Terry, Ed Soph, Chester Thompson, Ted Curson, Scott Colley, Cecil Bridgewater, David Berkman, John Carlson, Donny McCaslin, Phil Mattson, Edward Simon, David Binney, Kim Richmond, Bob Mintzer, Dave Pietro, Curt Moore, Louie Romero, and Greg Abate. Recent visits of major jazz artists include Wayne Bergeron, Miguel Zenon, the Matt Wilson Quartet, Avashai Cohen, Terrence Blanchard, and Marcus Roberts.

Opportunities are abundant for jazz studies at UW-Platteville. In addition to Jazz I the department offers the Pioneer Jazz Orchestra, the repertory big band, and four combos serving as classes for the study of jazz improvisation and styles. Jazz Improvisation and Theory, The History of Jazz, and Jazz Techniques courses round out the students’ further exploration of jazz studies at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
