Pioneering Your future

Career Planning Leads to Success

As students begin a new stage in their lives, it is important that parents and family members are aware of the services and programs available to assist with their student's personal, career and professional development. Parents and family members can assist by taking an interest and asking questions about their student's career development. Elements of career development that family, particularly parents, can assist with:

  • Stop into the Career and Professional Development Office when visiting campus.
  • Assist your student with Pioneer Career Network (PCN) registration. PCN is an online job searching resource that connects students with employers looking to hire for internships, co-ops and full-time positions.
  • Take an active interest and ask career-related questions.
  • Talk about your job and what you like and dislike about your job.
  • Talk to friends, supervisors/managers, and acquaintances that might be willing to allow your student to conduct an informational interview or job shadowing experience.
  • Encourage your student to seek summer employment related to an interested career field.
  • Strongly encourage your student to participate in at least one co-op or internship, if not more.
  • Always remember it is normal for students to change their minds about a major or career.
  • Suggest that your student use an online career assessment and exploration tool, such as Focus 2, to explore interests.
  • Encourage your student to participate in experiential learning opportunities such as: undergraduate student research, education abroadservice learning, and an internship or co-op.
