Topics covered include Strategic Sourcing, Forecasting and Collaborative Planning, Inventory Management, Customer Relationship Management, and Service Response Logistics.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, you should be able to

Unit Descriptions
Course Organization and Assignment Descriptions

Unit 1
In Unit 1 we will look at the importance of the relationships between a company and its suppliers. Using a supply chain approach, companies no longer "just buy" products, they strive to develop strong supplier bonds, creating a virtual vertically integrated organization. These relationships can work back through the intermediate component manufacturers, through to the raw material suppliers. There are a number of different activities that can be done to foster these relationships.

Initially we will look at the purchasing process itself. Both manual and electronic purchasing will be covered. Once an understanding of the basic process has been explored, we will turn our focus to managing the supplier base, implementing evaluation and certification programs, and developing a strategic program both nationally and internationally.

Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Describe a supply chain and define supply chain management.
  • Describe the objectives and elements of supply chain management.
  • Describe purchasing, procurement, and supply management.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the manual purchasing process, e-procurement, public procurement, and green purchasing.
  • Understand and appreciate the trends in ethical and sustainable sourcing.
  • Describe how ethical and sustainable sourcing strategies are developed and implemented.
  • Describe the difference between international purchasing and global sourcing.

Unit 2
This unit will focus on the functions of supply chain management that take place "within the walls" of the organization. Some of the information stems from traditional operations management principles. We will look at those first, and then add to them a supply chain twist.

Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Explain the role of demand forecasting in a supply chain.
  • Identify the components of a forecast.
  • Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative forecasting techniques.
  • Understand the terms used in MRP computations.
  • Compute available-to-promise quantities, MRP explosions, and DRP implosions.
  • List and discuss the major elements of lean production and Six Sigma quality.

Unit 3
In this unit we will explore the concepts involved in distribution in the supply chain. We will look at logistics both from a domestic and an international viewpoint, examining the movement of material, location of facilities, and logistics from a service perspective.
In this unit we will also learn about customer relationship management. From a supply chain perspective, firms seek to position themselves as value-enhancing suppliers to their customers.

Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Understand the strategic importance of logistics.
  • Describe how logistics affect supply chain management.
  • Discuss the strategic importance of CRM.
  • Describe the components of a CRM initiative.
  • Explain the impact of global location decisions on a supply chain.
  • Understand the six strategic roles of a foreign factory.
  • Understand how supply chain management in services differs from supply chain management in manufacturing.

Unit 4
During the course we have explored many of the various components of supply chain management. In the last unit, we will look at how the various parts fit together to form a fully integrated model. Many companies adopt or adapt sections of supply chain concepts, but the full benefit comes when an organization achieves both internal and external process integration.

Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Discuss the overall importance of process integration in supply chain management.
  • Understand the role played by information systems in creating information visibility along the supply chain.
  • Describe why firms need to measure and assess performance.
  • List a number of traditional, world-class performance measures.
  • Describe how the balanced scorecard and the SCOR models work.
