Organic Chemistry 354 Quiz - December 13, 1999

- 1. Locate the isoprene units in the following terpenes.
-
Answer
- 2. Eleostearic acid, C18H30O2, is found
in tung oil. Upon mild hydrogenation, eleostearic acid is converted to
stearic acid, C18H36O2. Upon very mild
hydrogenation, eleostearic acid is converted to a mixture of acids, one of
which is oleic acid,
C8H17CH=CHC8H15O2.
Treatment of eleostearic acid with hot, acidic potassium permanganate yields
1 part pentanoic acid, C5H10O2, 1 part
nonanedioic acid, C9H16O4, and 2 parts
of oxalic acid, HO2C-CO2H. What is the structure of
eleostearic acid?
Answer
- 3. Many organic compounds found in living systems are complex molecules
which can be characterized, in part, by simply listing the products of the
complete hydrolysis of the complex molecule. "Characterize" the following
groups of naturally occurring molecules by giving the class name(s) (or
general structure if you have forgotten the name) of the products of
complete hydrolysis. Also, give the name of the functional groups which
bond together the components of these complex molecules.
- a. DNA
- b. RNA Answer
