1. Proteins are polyamides which can be hydrolyzed by aqueous acid. Give the mechanism (curved arrows) for the acid catalyzed hydrolysis of an amide.

2. Give the structure of the product of the reaction of isobutyl propionate with excess isopropyl magnesium bromide followed by mild acid work-up.

3. Transesterification of ethylene glycol and diethyl malonate gives a polymeric polyester. Give the structure of a portion of the polymer showing at least four monomer units.

4. Outline a synthesis of ethyl propionate starting from methanol, ethanol, and/or any inorganic reagent.
