  • One group might do the actual reaction, ie., do a substitution, oxidation, reduction, etc.

  • Another group might catalyze this reaction.

  • Another group might activate the reacatant or catalysis.

  • Other groups might hold the substrate in a particular position.

  • Other groups help the enzyme maintain its unique conformation so all of the other groups are in exactly the right place.
