Göreme, in the Cappadocia Region of central Turkey, is an area of underground cities built in volcanic tuff by the Christians after the rise of Islam (my hair is 3 months longer). The underground cities had their start 2000 years ago when Christianity was first persecuted, but most were built 1000 years later. One underground city housed 20,000 people. In 1974, hitchhiking and donkeys were the only method to reach this place. Today, there are tourist hotels and balloon rides. Tourism marches on. 2 April 1974
