Sketching Standards
The following standards will be used in this course for all sketches:
1. Use all the principles of sketching as you learned them in IS 123.
2. Use engineering problem paper unless told otherwise by your instructor.
3. Best to use a 2H mechanical pencil with 0.5mm leads or a sharp 2H wooden pencil.
4. Use straight Gothic block lettering for all labeling including your name, course #, etc.
5. Always note the scale used. Locate at bottom of sheet.
a. SCALE: NONE if no scale is used
b. SCALE: ¼” = 1 FOOT is the traditional scale used on architectural drawings
c. SCALE: 1 PAPER GRID = 1 OBJECT GRID
d. SCALE: 1 GRID = ¼”
e. SCALE: 1 GRID = 5 MM
6. Draw as many views as necessary.
a. Use third-angle projection.
b. Sketch as many orthographic views as necessary
(1) Underneath each view label them: FRONT, TOP, RIGHT, etc.
(2) Designate the +X, +Y, and +Z directions with arrows outside the view.
c. Sketch the isometric views as necessary
(1) Use an arrow to indicate the line of sight direction for each orthographic view and label accordingly
(2) Designate the +X, +Y, and +Z directions with arrows outside the view.

Use the
symbol to mark the origin (0,0,0)
a. on all orthographic views
b. on the isometric drawing
8. Do not use a straight edge—learn how to do it freehand.
