Sample UV/VIS Dataset from Ocean Optics Fiber Optic Spectrometer of a Tungsten Blackbody Light Source (fancy speak for “lightbulb!”). Open it and print a nice Plot of it to hand in. If it doesn't open in Notepad, right click and use open with... Notepad.

To import data from a spectrometer into excel:

  1. Open the data set in Notepad and look at its organization. (Right click on the file and go to “Open With”)
  2. You’ll have to tell the Excel import wizard how many lines to reject, so count down to the data.
  3. Determine whether it is spaced with tabs, commas or what and select the check box.
  4. Hopefully, the data is in xy format with a space, tab or comma “delimiter” (the thing in between the data).  Some data formats are not simple lists and have to be “parsed” or specially sorted and rewritten using a program.
