Tuba/Euphonium Quartet Composition Contest
(open to all ages)

$1000 prize sponsored by the Sotto Voce Quartet.

The winning composition will be premiered by the Sotto Voce Quartet at the opening concert of the conference on March 7, 2013.

Works must be scored in bass clef for 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas (1 bass tuba and 1 contrabass tuba) and must not be shorter than 5 minutes nor longer than 10 minutes.

A score and complete set of parts must be submitted via email in PDF format to conference host forbesm@uwplatt.edu .

Live or Midi recordings (MP3’s) MUST accompany PDF scores via email.

All composition competition entries MUST be submitted via email by January 1, 2013.

There is no application fee to enter the composition contest, and the Sotto Voce Quartet maintains the right not to select a winner if entries are not of suitable quality.

Solo Competitions

All solo competitors will perform with piano accompaniment in all rounds.
An accompanist will be provided by the conference at no charge, however competitors may bring their own accompanist if they so choose.
Euphonium ($500* prize for each division)
• Performers born before Jan. 1, 1993: Euphonium Concerto, Horovitz (Novello)
• Performers born on or after Jan. 1, 1993: Capriccio, Forbes (Kendor)

Tuba ($500* prize for each division)
• Performers born before Jan. 1, 1993: Tuba Concerto, Ellerby (Maecenas)
• Performers born on or after Jan. 1, 1993: Tuba Concerto, Gregson (Novello)


The 4 winning soloists will perform their solo with the Isthmus Brass under the direction of John Stevens.

Preliminary Round:
Fantasy Movements, Plog (Cimarron)

Final Round:
• One (1) composition
AND
• one (1) arrangement of quartet’s choice.

Total performance time of both selections together not to exceed 15 minutes. Works may be scored for any combination of tubas and/or euphoniums. Quartet may select individual movements from larger works.

The winning quartet will perform their final round selections on the final concert of the conference.
