Hisham A. Abdel-Aal, received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt in 1984.  Following his graduation he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Egyptian Air Force.  While at the Air force, he attended the graduate school at the Alexandria University and obtained a master degree in mechanical Engineering in 1986, followed by a special Graduate Diploma in Fluid Mechanics.

Upon arrival to the United States, he attended the graduate school at Auburn University, where he studied a series of courses in Aero-and Gas dynamics and propulsion.  In 1994 he was offered a research assistantship by Tuskegee University to study toward a master degree in Mechanical Engineering which he obtained in 1995.  His work in the master thesis resulted in a novel thermometric technique, based on LASER speckle photography, to inversely find the temperature distribution in tribo-specimens In-situ.

He joined the graduate school at UNC-Charlotte in 1996 where he worked under Professor Stuart Smith and obtained his Doctorate in 1998.  His Ph. D. dissertation , entitled "Thermal influences in dry sliding of metals" introduced for the first time in tribology literature the concept of "Thermal Compatibility" of metallic pairs.  That is the reduction of wear in metallic sliding systems through the enhancement of friction-induced-heat removal by matching material pairs based  on the compatibility of their thermal properties.

Following graduation, Dr.  Abdel-Aal assumed an adjunct faculty position at York Technical College, Rock Hill, South Carolina where he taught a series of Mechanical Engineering Technology courses, that vary from the neophyte to senior undergraduate level.  In 2001  became affiliated with the Nanotribology Laboratory for Information Systems NEMS and MEMS at the Ohio State University, where he worked on the characterization of Ultrathin Polymeric Films.  He returned back to teaching at York Technical college until 2003 where he assumed a visiting professor position at the College of Science and Technology at East Carolina University.

Dr.  Abdel-Aal  joined the department of General Engineering at UW-Platteville in the Fall of 2004.

Dr. Abdel-Aal's research interests lie within the general area of design, material performance and characterization, and thermo-tribology.  His current focus is on studying the effects of thermo-mechanical coupling and thermal inertia on the tribological integrity of materials in sliding applications; thermal influences in the processing of semiconductors; the kinetics of pressure induced phase transformations in semiconductors; and tribo-optimization of artificial prostheses

Dr.  Abdel-Aal is a member of several professional and scientific organizations including the New York Academy of Sciences, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.  His biography is listed in several Who's Who Publications including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Technology and Who's Who in the World.  He is the author or co-author of more than 50 archival and peer reviewed conference publications.  He frequently reviews for major scientific and engineering periodicals (including the prestigious Institute of Physics Journals).

Dr.  Abdel-Aal is the recipient of several awards and fellowships including the   Heraeus Seminar (awarded by the Heraeus Foundation in Germany) Fellowship in Tribology, and the best research paper award in the South Eastern Conference on Applied Mechanics (SECTAM)

Prompted by the requirements of elementary education for his step son, Dr. Abdel-Aal  developed a keen interest in advanced preparation and training of K-12 Science and Math teachers.  This interest has resulted in delivering a series of seminars aimed at consolidating the skills of 9-12 teachers in scientific research and teaching mathematics for ESL students.

Dr. Abdel-Aal  enjoys experimenting with recipes, wood working, and gardening.
