- Wed., Sept. 17 – Applications are due. The application can be found to the left on the page and either emailed to Tammy Salmon-Stephens at salmont@uwplatt.edu or dropped off at her office, 148 Ottensman Hall.

College of EMS Peer Mentoring
Mission
The College of EMS Mentor Program provides an opportunity for women entering the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science to be paired with experienced students who provide friendship, guidance, and support through the time of transition into a new and challenging environment.
Objectives
- Provide personal support to the participants.
- Heighten self-esteem of participants.
- Provide academic advice to the participants.
- Provide skills and information for professional development.
- Increase interaction between participants and participating faculty members in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science.
Who can be a mentor?
A mentor is an experienced Junior or Senior college student, majoring in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science and provides significant assistance to a person who is less experienced during a time of transition. The roles of a mentor are to:
- Provide general guidance, support and effective strategies to educational success.
- Assist the mentee in career path counseling.
- Suggest academic electives to meet mentee's objectives.
- Determine goals with mentee.
- Actively participate in the mentor program activities each semester.
- Send an email to mentees at least every two weeks to offer your assistance and provide support.
- Attend other campus events with mentor group. For example, SWE activities.
- Provide honest evaluation of mentor program.
Who can be a mentee?
A mentee is a Freshman or Sophomore college student, majoring in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science who receives support from a more experienced person during a time of transition. The roles of a mentee are to:
- Seek and utilize guidance, support, and effective strategies to educational success provided by mentors.
- Actively participate in the three planned mentor program activities each semester.
- Respond to emails sent by mentor.
- Be prepared to let her mentor know how she can help.
- Attend other campus events with mentor group.
- Provide honest evaluation of mentor program.

- Discuss pros and cons of living off- and on-campus
- Discuss pros and cons of 4 years versus 5 years of college

- Do the Meyer's Briggs Personality Indicator (Counseling Services, 342-1865)
- Invite each other to dinner at home
- Discuss how to handle long distance relationships
- Discuss why you have chosen your major
- Invite to social events
- Discuss co-ops and internships
- Talk about the advantage/disadvantages of having a minor
- Go to an athletic event
- Go to the Advising and Career Exploration Services (ACES, 342-1033)
- Go to the "M"
- Look at holiday house decorations
- Give each other moral support
- Invite a professor from your department for your meeting
- Talk about your goals and/or set some goals
- Visit Dairy Queen or Culvers or other restaurant in town
- Visit the Mining Museum
- Participate in a SWE meeting
- Discuss business etiquette
- Visit a jobsite
- Practice interviewing skills
- Discuss "corporate culture" and "unwritten rules"
- Discuss how to manage finances and benefit packages
- Discuss fears and concerns about being in the workplace
- Surprise your mentor or mentee with a small gift, card or other special recognition
