Schedule a Writing Center Appointment
Available to all UW-Platteville students, Writing Center appointments are free one-on-one sessions with experienced fellow writers trained to consult on assignments in any discpline and other writing-related projects.
How to schedule an appointment
To schedule an appointment, visit the Writing Center on the 3rd floor of Brigham Hall or call us at 608.342.1615. Drops-ins are welcome at the Brigham location, but the best way to secure an appointment is to schedule in advance.
What to expect FROM your writing appointment
The Writing Center schedules 30 or 60 minute sessions, depending on the length of the paper and topic of discussion. Guided by your requests, your tutor will respond, as a critical reader and peer, to what you’ve written—pointing out sections that work well, identifying possible problems, helping you to learn important principles of writing, and discovering ways to effectively reflect and revise your paper.
To help make the most of your tutoring session, we ask that you bring your writing prompt or assignment sheet and be prepared with specific questions about the assignment or writing in general.
The tutor will likely concentrate higher-level concerns first, making sure you're responding to the assignment and that you're writing a focused, organized, and developed paper before he or she helps with concerns such as style, grammar, word choice, and punctuation. Rather than simply proofreading or editing your paper, our goal is to help guide you through the writing process and encourage you to become a more independent thinker and writer.
