The emergency call boxes are not telephones, but radios that operate on the University Police radio frequency which is used by the Platteville Police Department, and monitored by the Grant County Sheriffs Department. When someone pushes the button on an emergency call box, all on duty police officers using or monitoring the frequency receive an alarm announcement providing the exact location of that call. Police response will not rely on the caller being able to provide information before assistance is on its way.
The emergency call boxes should be used for situations that require immediate police, fire or ambulance services. The emergency call boxes are not intended for general or routine service requests. Callers must remember this call for help is being broadcast as an alarm, and the on-duty police officers will respond to the call as such. Misuse of the emergency call boxes will not be tolerated due to the possibility of interfering with on-going emergency radio traffic.
How to use the Emergency Call Boxes
- Press the PUSH FOR HELP button located on the front panel of the emergency call box.
- A green indicator light will light up momentarily, signaling that the call has been sent to all on-duty police officers via radio.
- In addition there will be a general message informing you that the call has been sent.
- A on-duty police officer may speak directly to you through the emergency call box,or if the on-duty police officer is close to the location of the alarm, simply proceed to that location.
