Residence Halls: The side and back exterior doors to each residence hall are locked each evening at 7:00 p.m and the front doors are locked at 11 pm week nights and 8 pm on weekends. They remain locked until 7:00 a.m. each morning when the doors are unlocked by custodial staff (by residence hall staff on weekends and holidays). Residents of the hall, through their elected hall government, may mandate an earlier locking of exterior doors. Each resident, eighteen years of age and above, is issued a special key to open the exterior doors of the building. Residents under eighteen years of age may only have an exterior door key with the written permission of a parent or guardian. A different key set is utilized for each building. Keys to exterior doors are coded by numbers and letters. Keys may not be traced to a building on the basis of the coding, except by trained university employees. Exterior door key cores are changed at the beginning of each semester and upon the loss of a key by any resident of the building. Exteriors of residence halls are a part of the campus area patrolled by University Police and any security concerns are reported and corrected.
Student Rooms: Each student room within the residence halls is equipped with a door lock that is key operated. Only the resident and the roommate are issued keys to the individual room. The lock must be operated manually from the inside of the room and by key from the exterior. Keys are numerically coded and cannot be traced to a building, except by specifically trained university employees. When a student loses a room key, the lock core can typically be replaced the same day and new keys (different from the lost key) issued to the occupant(s). Each residence hall room has for each occupant, either a dresser with locking drawer or a desk with hardware installed to enable the student to supply a padlock to secure personal property such as a checkbook, cash, jewelry, etc.
Each student room door in the residence halls is equipped with a one-way viewer to determine who is at the door or standing in the hallway. Additionally, each residence hall room has a telephone with its own number. Residents are furnished with directory information about emergency services and 911 service is available in the Platteville community.
Maintenance: Maintenance personnel are identified in the residence halls by distinctive nametags and in the case of full-time employees, by uniform. Maintenance personnel enter student rooms only upon receipt of an authorized work order or report of an emergency. If a room occupant is not present at the time that maintenance personnel are in the room, a written notice is left in the room informing the occupant(s) of the maintenance work performed.
Master keys to individual student rooms are kept secured by combination of two separate locking doors or drawers. The master keys are issued to maintenance workers of the Student Housing department by sign-out procedure. Log procedures include date, day and time of check-out and check-in of the key. All locksmith services and lock changing services are provided through the locksmith employed by the Physical Plant of UW-Platteville.
Visitation & Overnight Guests: Visitation within residence halls (times when residents may have visitors of the opposite gender) is governed by a policy distributed to all residents. The vast majority of residential areas are designated as Open Visitation, meaning that residents may have visitors of the opposite gender at any time. No restrictions are placed upon the visitation unless the wing or hall residents should choose, by vote, to implement any additional conditions such as escorts, log sheets, or restricted hours. Students who violate the published visitation policy are subject to disciplinary action by the University. There is one residence hall wing for men and one for women where there is no visitation permitted.
Overnight guests within the residence halls are allowed with roommate consent, proper registration and various restrictions. Failure to follow the policy and guidelines will result in disciplinary action and sanctions including possible loss of overnight guest privileges. Please refer to the Residence Hall Handbook for the complete policy and limitations. Residents are responsible for the actions of their guests at all times.
University Buildings: Each university building is locked following the completion of the business day’s activities and unlocked prior to the beginning of each business day. The schedule for securing buildings varies according to the activities occurring in the building. In addition, buildings are opened prior to the start of special events and subsequently locked at the completion of the event. Responsibility for locking and unlocking buildings is shared (depending on location) by custodial staff and campus police. Every employee (except students) of the university is issued keys to the areas necessary for them to perform their assigned duties.
The physical facilities department maintains the university buildings and grounds with a concern for safety and security. It inspects campus facilities regularly, promptly makes repairs affecting safety and security, and responds immediately to reports of potential safety and security hazards.
Authorization to Enter Buildings After HoursIf a student needs access to a lab or classroom after hours, the student must obtain a building pass from the faculty or staff member responsible for that area. All information on the building pass must be completed, and the student must present his/her Student Identification card along with the building pass to gain access to the area.
The University Police provides building passes to department secretaries and faculty members. At no time will a member of the University Police issue a pass to a student.
When a student needs access after hours, the student should contact the University Police at 342-1584. The student will need to inform the dispatcher that he/she has a building pass, the building and room the student needs access to, and when and where the student will meet the officer. It is not always possible for the officer to meet students due to emergency situations. If the officer is busy at the time of the call, the student will be informed at that time. However, there are times when an emergency occurs between the time of the original call and the designated meeting time. If the officer does not arrive the student should call 342-1584 again to find out if there is a delay.
The Wisconsin Administrative Code UWS 18.06 (7) & (21) will be the policies overriding the issuance of this pass.
“18.06 (7) CLOSING HOURS (a) Except as specifically provided in this code, the chief administrative officer may establish closing hours and closed periods for university lands, buildings, or portions thereof...Should you need any additional information or have any questions feel free to contact the University Police Department.
