What's It All About

Acknowledging social issues on campus

A group of students and faculty conducted a series of events focused on sensitivity to diversity at UW-Platteville (UWP). The project was funded with a Chancellor's Opportunity Grant and concentrated on five sensitivity areas:

  1. Religious and Spiritual Beliefs
  2. Culture and Ethnicity
  3. English Language Learning (ELL)
  4. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ)
  5. Visible (e.g. uses a wheelchair) and Invisible (e.g. depression) Disabilities

Creating a conversation

The Project Access group invited students and faculty to attend separate events, each dedicated to one of the five sensitivity areas. Students and faculty in attendance expressed their views on of each area, paying attention to improving UWP campus life.

Calling forth the courage to communicate

Almost 100 faculty and students attended the events and spoke up about their views on each issue. As a result, the Project Access group made the appropriate contacts on campus to best assist each of us who have questions and concerns involving each of the sensitivity areas.

Encouraging the use of available resources (on and off campus)

The Project Access group took their collective insights and resources, and combined them into this website, a one-stop shop for access to resources on campus and in the Platteville area.

Spreading sensitivity

With the awarding of this Chancellor's Opportunity Grant, the chancellor set a priority for UWP, to become sensitive to issues of diversity on campus.

Securing successful support networks

On this site, Project Access has pulled together a wide variety of resources and information relevant to each sensitivity area. Our hope is to facilitate access to campus and community support systems.
