Reinventing Public Libraries Through the
Eyes of Generation 'Y'

What Generation 'Y' wants from their libraries:

    • Value: Services that help them save time, are convenient, easy, customized and of high quality. Services that exceed customer expectations
    • To have the library set up so they can use it independently
    • 24x7 library hours
    • Have access to the library on the web
    • Lockers so they can pick up their ILL anytime
    • Self check out
    • Drive throughs
    • Speed, they want it NOW!
    • Computers
    • Opportunities to work in groups (They are a very social group)
    • Free classes on how to use the Internet
    • Free videos
    • Storytimes for their children

Suggestions from Generation 'Y' for improving libraries:

    • Let people know what is available at your libraries.
    • Make people aware of ILL.
    • Welcome people as they come into the library.
    • Let people know you are available to help, but do not hover.
    • Provide good signage--we don't want to look stupid so often don't ask for help. Good signage is a must. Also, have staff wear name badges, just in case we do need to cave in and ask for help.
    • Be involved in your community.
    • Color! Make libraries more colorful and play background music.
    • Provided Cappuccino
    • Computers
