CH-ANTH 3000 4 Credits Ethnic Minority Cultures of China
An introduction to ethnic minority cultures of China in anthropological perspective with topics including the histories and cultures of fifty-five minority nationalities in China. Eleven topics organize and explain the cultural characteristics of each minority nationality, organized according to recognized linguistic systems. Two weeks of field work in tribal and ethnic minority communities are incorporated into the class and provide an opportunity to observe the rich cultural mosaic of modern China at first hand. Chinese Ethnic Folk Dances are included throughout the course.

CH-SOC 3000 3 Credits Contemporary China (Economy and Society)
A review of the social and economic history of China and the issues and problems facing modern China, including the development of trade, agriculture and industry, a social security system, population dynamics, social policy related to population, and restructuring of state-owned enterprises. This course has a strong emphasis on the interaction of social and economic factors, as well as the role economic reform has played in altering the direction of the country. The overall objective is to understand the significance of "socialism with Chinese characteristics."

CH-HIST 3000 3 Credits Chinese History and Culture
This course includes a geographical introduction to China and outlines the 5000-year history of Chinese civilization. Confucianism and Taoism are included, along with a focus on religious culture and literature of China, China's primary scientific and academic achievements and the lunar year calendar, festivals, and legends of local cultures.

CH-CHIN 1010 4 Credits Practical Chinese Language
An elementary Chinese text serves as the teaching material for the multi-purpose learning of Chinese phonetics-pinyin, spoken Chinese and written Chinese. Thirty lessons focus daily topics for conversations, with supplementary tapes available to students. Scripts of dialogues are printed in Chinese characters as well as the more recognizable roman pinyin for beginners. Exercises are deliberately designed for the two-fold purpose of pronunciation and intonation in speaking as well as recognition and reproduction in writing. No prior coursework in Chinese is required.
CH-CHIN 1010 PRACTICAL CHINESE LANGUAGE (PDF)
CH-ANTH 1010 1 Credit Cross-Cultural Understanding
Students develop a journal of their cross-cultural observations, noting changes over the course of their study abroad experience at South Central University for Nationalities in Wuhan, China, and chronicling their interpersonal and intercultural development. Students will become more aware of their own native culture and language and juxtapose it with the general language and culture of China and its 55 minority cultures.
