Purpose

The UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence Committee will annually recognize, through the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence, an instructional or a non-instructional academic staff member who has provided essential services to the university while demonstrating excellence of performance, personal interaction, initiative and creativity, and outstanding achievement.

Additionally, the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence Committee, with the Academic Staff Senate and the Office of the Chancellor shall review all nominations for:

  • Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award. The nomination should be for a non-instructional academic staff member who has provided essential services to the university while demonstrating excellence of performance, personal interaction, initiative and creativity, and outstanding achievement.
  • Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award. The nomination should be for a non-instructional Academic Staff program. The program should provide essential services to the university while demonstrating excellence of performance, initiative and creativity, and outstanding achievement.

The Chancellor shall put forward one nomination for each of the two Regents Award categories to the University of Wisconsin System Administration's Office of Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

All nomination materials are confidential. However, after the selection has been made, the nomination forms and supporting documents will be returned to the institution to be placed in the individual's personnel files. Program Award nomination forms and supporting documents will be returned to the institution.

Sponsors

The Office of the Chancellor sponsors the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence.

The Board of Regents sponsors both the Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award and the Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award.

Eligibility

Instructional and non-instructional academic staff members that hold appointments of 0.50 FTE or more and have a minimum of twelve months of continuous employment at UW-Platteville are eligible to be nominated or apply for the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence.

Non-instructional academic staff members that hold appointments of 0.50 FTE or more and have a minimum of twelve months of continuous employment at UW-Platteville are eligible to be nominated or apply for the 2014 Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award.

Selection Criteria

Individual Award nominees will be evaluated based on documentation of their outstanding achievements and contributions in their role as an Academic Staff member. The application should provide specific evidence of excellence, worthy of recognition. Particular attention will be paid to nominees that are not only outstanding in their roles as university employees, but also show evidence of other service to UW-Platteville and to the community.

Program Award nominees will be evaluated on documentation of providing essential services to the university while demonstrating excellence of performance, initiative and creativity and outstanding achievement.

Selection Committee

The UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence selection will be undertaken by the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence Committee. This will be a standing committee of the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Senate. There shall be at least one representative from each of the five UW-Platteville Service Areas, a UW-Platteville Academic Staff Senator, and a UW-Platteville academic staff member who is appointed at-large.

The Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award and the Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award submissions shall be received by the Chairperson, UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence Committee. This committee will rank and forward nominations to the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Senate and the Office of the UW-Platteville Chancellor. The Chancellor shall forward a single nomination for each of the two categories to the Board of Regents. A Special Regents Committee will select the recipients.

Recognition

The UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence consists of a $1,000 honorarium and a UW-Platteville Recognition Plaque. The recipient of the award will be recognized at the Chancellor's Fall Convocation Ceremony.

The Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award consists of two $5,000 awards which will be made to two non-instructional academic staff members in recognition of their exceptional service to the university ($5,000 per individual). The funds for these awards will be designated to support the recipients' professional development or for other activities approved by the recipients that enhance a university program or function. The recipients will be honored at a 2015 Board of Regents meeting.

The Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award consists of a $5,000 award to be made to a non-instructional academic staff program in recognition of its exceptional service to the university. The funds for this award will be designated to support program enhancements such as the staff recipients' professional development or program-related supplies and expenses, or for other activities approved by the staff recipients that enhance a university program or function. The recipients will be honored at a 2015 Board of Regents meeting. News releases will be sent to state and local media.

Who May Nominate

Nominations may come from a college, department, or division unit. Nominations may come from instructional or, non-instructional staff members, administrators, and faculty. Self-nominations are also welcome.

Nominations must be made to the Chairperson, Academic Staff Award for Excellence Committee.

Organization of the Application

UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence and Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award

  • The application submission should consist of the following documents and follow this order:
  • Application Cover Form (from Academic Staff Senate website).
  • A Letter of Nomination addressing the four criteria of (Excellence of Performance, Personal Interaction, Initiative and Creativity, Outstanding Achievement) as listed below.
  • A one or two page statement by the nominee on his or her professional contributions and service to the university.
  • Up to four letters of support from colleagues qualified to comment on the nominee's work. Where possible, the four nomination criteria should be addressed.
  • A brief resume, not to exceed five pages, which documents the nominee's performance.

Application Cover Form

This document cites Nominee and Nominator information, and also allows the applicant to cite which one of the three award categories the nomination pertains to. An individual may submit simultaneously for both the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence and the Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award.

Letter of Nomination

This statement should be an executive summary that highlights the contributions and achievements of the nominee as described. It should include evidence of work above and beyond the nominee's stated job responsibilities and requirements. Evidence of University involvement, outreach involvement, or community service should also be included.

Note: the Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award Criteria Letter excludes the category of Personal Interaction.

Nomination materials should address the following criteria, as they will be considered by the campus and the Special Regents Committee in the review of all nominations. All references to "institution" are intended to include UW System Administration.

  • Excellence of Performance: performance that consistently and substantially exceeds in quality the expectations for the position; performance that has set superior standards of excellence and efficiency in relation to the mission of the departmental unit and the university, and has resulted in important and significant contributions to his or her department and institution.
  • Personal Interaction: performance that consistently and substantially demonstrates ability and willingness to work positively and effectively with others; performance that demonstrates ability and willingness to manage changes in work priorities, procedures, and organization.
  • Initiative and Creativity: performance that consistently and substantially demonstrates an innovative approach to the job, thereby improving productivity and the quality of the work assigned; performance that demonstrates efforts to improve personal job performance.
  • Outstanding Achievement: performance that consistently and substantially has resulted in important and significant contributions to the departmental unit and that has furthered the mission of the university; performance that has resulted in distinction in one's profession - campus-wide, system-wide, statewide, nationally or internationally.

Letters of Support

Letters may come from students, peers, colleagues, administrators, supervisors, alumni, or community members who have first-hand knowledge of the nominee's performance. The letters should describe the specific outstanding contributions that make the nominee deserving of this award. (No more than four letters of support).

Resume

The resume should outline the responsibilities of his/her current position held on campus, the degree(s), professional and personal activities, awards, professional and university accomplishments, and community involvement.

Organization of the Application

Regents Academic Staff Program Excellence Award

  • A Letter of Nomination addressing the three criteria listed below (Excellence of Performance, Initiative and Creativity, Outstanding Achievement).
  • A one- or two-page statement by program staff on the program's contributions and service to the university.
  • Up to four letters of support from colleagues qualified to comment on the nominated program. Where possible, the three nomination criteria should be addressed.

Nomination materials should address the following criteria, as they will be considered by the Special Regent Committee in the review of all nominations. All references to "institution" are intended to include UW System Administration.

  • Excellence of Performance: performance that has set superior standards of excellence and efficiency in relation to the mission of the university, and has resulted in important and significant contributions to the university.
