The 53rd National Collegiate Soils Contest is hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in Southwest Wisconsin's driftless area. Twenty-three practice sites are scheduled over four days prior to the individual contest on Thursday. These sites were selected specifically to show the diversity of soils in the region and to prepare students for the contest sites. Practice sites will be available Sunday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 24. The individual contest is scheduled for Thursday morning, with an optional tour of the Coon Creek Watershed to immediately follow on Thursday afternoon. The group judging contest will be held on Friday, April 26, with presentations to follow later that day.
Coaches, assistants, and contestants are asked to pay a registration fee of $30 per person. Registration fees will be collected from participating teams at the Welcome meeting on April 21.
Please complete and submit the advance registration form as soon as possible. This information will be considered tentative, and will be used for planning purposes. Formal registration will be completed upon arrival in Platteville at the welcome meeting on the evening of Sunday, April 21, 2013.
Sets of example soil materials are available at a cost of $30/ set (shipping included). The set includes 10-12 samples collected from practice sites. The samples have been air dried but not ground (to preserve structure) and include coarse fragments where present. Percent clay and sand (including sand fractions), along with a brief description of the materials including soil type, horizon, and parent material will be included with each set.
