The pre-veterinary medicine program consists of a selected group of courses covering a wide range of subject matter. The intent of the program is to provide a basic body of knowledge that will prepare the student to move efficiently into and through the professional curriculum of the veterinary college. It is, as the name implies, a preparatory program. The pre-veterinary student is also encouraged to develop an understanding of animal management as well as a knowledge of experience in the profession of veterinary medicine. These experiences will be gained independently or in appropriate classes.

General Admission Requirements for the Veterinary School,
  1. English Composition or Journalism, 3-6 credits Must include completeion of: a satisfactory score on a college English placement exam or an introductory English composotion course plus one of the following:
    - an English composition or journalism course which the performance evaluation is based on writing skills -or-
    - evidence that writing skills were included in the grading of a specific college level course.

  2. Statistics, (an introductory course- one semester) 3 Credits

  3. Biological Sciences, (with a lab) 5 Credits:
    General Biology or Zoology, (an introductory course, must include labroatory-one semester) 5 Credits.

  4. Genetics or Animal Breeding, (must include principles of heredity and their application-one semester) 3 Credits

  5. Physics, (two semester) 6 credits

  6. Social Sciences and Humanities, 6 Credits

  7. Chemistry, 14 credits
    - General Chemistry and Qualitative, (must include lab-two semesters) 8 Credits
    - Organic (one semester sufficient to satisfy biochem prerequisite)
    - Biochemistry (one semester-must have organic prerequisite)

  8. Elective credits to meet total 60 semester credits

Non-academic requirements:

Each student must show evidence of experience in the responsibility for the actual care of animals; this should include experience with food-producing animals. Students must also show knowledge of and experience with the profession of veterinary medicine.
