From the Director
This email was sent to all on-campus residents on October 25, 2016.
Hello residence hall students.
I hope that your year at UW-Platteville is off to a great start! The purpose of this email is to provide important information regarding your housing for 2017-18. YOU are RESPONSIBLE for reading and understanding the content of this email.
Here are the highlights of this email:
The UW-System Residency Requirement is being, and will continue to be, enforced for Freshmen and Sophomore students this year and years to follow.
Southwest Hall will run an early sign up in November for students with 60 or more university credits taken after high school as of August, 2017 OR for students who are at least 20 years old at the time of sign up.
Once a contract is submitted electronically, students will NOT be able to cancel for any reason. This is true for all students, regardless of your year in school. You cannot change your mind once you have submitted your contract.
Please read on.
We are excited to make you aware that you have already taken a step in the right direction to SUCCESS. National studies indicate that students who live on campus tend to earn better grades, are more satisfied with their college experience, and are more likely to graduate than those who live off campus. We think that living on campus allows for great opportunities to become involved in leadership, personal self-discovery, and a broadening world perspective.
University of Wisconsin Board of Regents policy states that all freshman and sophomore students must live in university residence halls unless they meet established criteria for exemption. Exceptions to this requirement are authorized, with appropriate completion of paperwork, for the following reasons:
1. Students who commute daily from the home of their parent/legal guardian within a 50 mile radius
2. Students who are 21 years of age or older
3. Students who have been out of high school for at least two years
4. Students who have 60 or more university credits completed after high school
5. Students who are married
Students must submit documentation in addition to completing the Request for Exemption form provided by the Department of Residence Life. Students are not released from the requirement unless they receive written authorization from me, the Director of Residence Life. Once you complete a residence life contract, however, you will be held to it regardless of any of the above criteria. You may not change your mind after your contract is submitted.
Please note that students will be held to the residency requirement and their contract terms through this year and beyond and should not proceed with making plans with others to live off campus or sign leases, etc. as we don’t want students having to pay double rental rates for a residence hall room and an off campus living space.
Students who are eligible to live off campus and choose to submit a contract will not be allowed to cancel that contract for any reason, unless no longer attending UW-Platteville.
If you submit a contract, no matter what, you will be held to the residency requirement and residence hall contract, and will be billed for a residence hall space accordingly - regardless of any plans you make without the approval of the Department of Residence Life at UW-Platteville. We will be checking your status during room reservation time to confirm your compliance with the UW Board of Regents Residency Requirement.
The following reasons (not all inclusive) are common issues presented in previous years and will not be considered for exemption from the residency requirement:
· Financial concerns
· Roommate issues
· Dissatisfaction with hall environment
· Health concerns that can be accommodated in other residence hall options
Southwest Hall is opening its doors early for room reservation to students who will have Junior and above credit load (60 or more university credits taken after high school) status for Fall, 2017 or who are at least 20 years old at the time of sign up. We are excited to offer this opportunity for early sign up in November to our older students. Southwest Hall is a very popular option, and we hope our Juniors and above residents will appreciate the opportunity to secure their space ahead of the remainder of sign up happening in February.
This early sign up is only for Southwest Hall. A $150 prepayment is required at the time of sign up to reserve your first selected space. Please note that you must submit your $150 prepayment to ensure your space during early sign-up. More information on the Southwest Hall sign up schedule will be coming your way very soon.
The room reservation process for the remainder of our residence halls, including Cooper LLC will occur in February. There will be a change in space designation for two of our buildings. Beginning fall, 2017, Melcher Hall (currently all male) and Wilgus Hall (currently all female), will become coeducational facilities with men and women living in both.
SPECIAL NOTE: All residence hall contracts are full academic year contracts. Once a contract is submitted electronically, it is legally binding. No cancellations of contract will be permitted unless you are no longer attending UW-Platteville. The Department of Residence Life does not offer one semester contracts, however, students participating in a university sponsored (study abroad, co-op, internship, student teaching) or military service for the spring semester of 2018 will not be held to their contract. We will be confirming your involvement to ensure compliance. Again, failure to submit the $150 prepayment at the time of sign up will not cancel your space, however, you may not receive the space you selected but may be reassigned to another based on when you submit your prepayment.
Please be watching your email for more information soon regarding room sign up and securing a space for next year. In summary:
· Southwest Hall sign up will happen in November (more information coming soon) and the room reservation process for the remaining halls will be in February.
· It is your responsibility to read all information presented to you in regards to 2017-18 room reservations, so you know how to proceed.
