Fostering a healthy and successful veterans community in higher education.

This spring UW-Platteville will be hosting a seminar focusing on the effects of combat related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in higher education. Our goal is to raise awareness and promote empathy for student veterans who are suffering from the invisible wounds of war. We hope that this seminar will help your campus foster a healthy and successful veterans community. We will be discussing how the side effects of combat related PTSD can manifest themselves as distractions and deterrents in an educational setting. Introductions will be provided by Tim Long, a veteran currently enrolled at UW-Platteville and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos. We will be hearing from Michael Orban, a Vietnam veteran who has struggled with PTSD; and Deirdre Dalsing, Director of Counseling Services at UW-Platteville. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with a panel of veterans that are currently students or employed in higher education. We will also be presenting on "best practices" for institutions of higher learning in supporting a healthy and successful veterans community.
