Safe Walk

As a commitment to the ongoing concern for the safety of the students and employees of UW-Platteville, Chancellor Shields announced the implementation of a “safe walk” service in 2010. The Safe Walk program is a free service to students and employees of the campus who want to be escorted anywhere on campus or within an approximate two block distance off-campus.

In the fall of 2012, the Safe Walk program was transformed into a student security program supervised by University Police.  Student security employees work Wednesday–Sunday, 10 p.m.–3 a.m. Each shift is staffed with a male and female student to meet and accompany the person requesting the escort to her or his destination.

Anyone needing the service is to call the University Police Department at 608.342.1584. The escorts will meet you and accompany you on foot to or at any location on campus and within two blocks off campus. Escorts will be identifiable by their official name tag and vest. The escorts will also be equipped with a radio and a cell phone for use in the event of the need for urgent assistance. Escorts are trained and an extensive criminal background check is conducted as a part of their qualifications for this service.

General Safety Tips:

  1. Plan ahead and go with friends to and from events and activities.
  2. Walk with friends or a group, especially in hours of darkness.
  3. Walk in well-lit areas and stick to sidewalks.
  4. Be intentionally aware while walking.
    • Pay attention to your surroundings using all of your senses. That means no distractions by iPods, smartphones, and headphones.
    • Plan your route and scan for available escape routes in case you need them.
    • Actively note the locations of emergency call boxes along your route.
  5. Use your intuition—if a situation doesn’t feel right, leave the area.

The UW-Platteville Police Department will provide escort services during the days and times that the student security employees are not working. You may arrange an escort by calling the City of Platteville Police Department at 608.348.2313. Please wait in a secure area until the officers are able to arrive.  Please understand that it may take an officer awhile to respond, depending on circumstances and activities.

Any questions about this program, please contact the University Police at 608.342.1584 or the Dean of Students Office at 608.342.1854.
