Safe Walk

As a commitment to the ongoing concern for the safety of the students and employees of UW-Platteville, Chancellor Shields announced the implementation of a “safe walk” service in 2010. The Safe Walk program is a free service to students and employees of the campus who want to be escorted anywhere on campus or within an approximate two block distance off-campus.  The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In the fall of 2012, the Safe Walk program was transformed into a student security program supervised by University Police.  The student security program underwent another change in 2014, with the merge of the student security program and student parking program.   Student employees became known as University Resource Officers (URO).  UROs are scheduled during the regular academic sessions, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and Wednesday–Sunday, 10 p.m.–3 a.m.

Anyone needing the Safe Walk service is to call the University Police Department at 608.342.1584. The officers will meet you and accompany you on foot to or at any location on campus and within two blocks off campus. UROs will be uniformed and have proper identification. They will also be equipped with a radio and a cell phone for use in the event of the need for urgent assistance. University Resource Officers are trained and an extensive criminal background check is conducted as a part of their qualifications for this service.

UW-Platteville Police Officers will provide escort services during the days and times that the University Resource Officers are not scheduled. You may arrange an escort by calling the City of Platteville Police Department at 608.348.2313. Please wait in a secure area until the officers are able to arrive.  Please understand that it may take an officer awhile to respond, depending on circumstances and activities.

Any questions about this program, please contact the University Police at 608.342.1584 or the Dean of Students Office at 608.342.1854.

General Safety Tips:

  • Plan ahead and go with friends to and from events and activities.
  • Walk with friends or a group, especially in hours of darkness.
  • Walk in well-lit areas and stick to sidewalks.
  • Be intentionally aware while walking.
    • Pay attention to your surroundings using all of your senses. That means no distractions by iPods, smartphones, and headphones.
    • Plan your route and scan for available escape routes in case you need them.
    • Actively note the locations of emergency call boxes along your route.
  • Use your intuition—if a situation doesn’t feel right, leave the area.
