Welcome to the UW-P Men's Volleyball Club!

NEWS and UPDATES:

Apr. 1
It has been a long time since the last update so we have a lot to tell. Both teams had many games during that time as well as our deserved spring break. Both teams went to Iowa City to play at the Hawkeye Spring Classic and did fairly well while Varsity lost in the quarterfinals of the Silver Bracket, the JV only lost the Championship game of the Bronze Bracket. Noteworthy is that JV got revenge by beating DuPaul during their pool play and later upset Wisconsin B eliminating their chance towards Bronze Championship.

Another noteworthy event occurred when Varsity beat Marquette for the first time in a long history, really upsetting Marquette. Spring break was cut short since we had a makeup game against Stevens Point on Monday and the last weekend was also in the light of volleyball with games against UW Stout and a makeup game against LaCrosse.

In National news… Rankings are out and we initially placed 15th and could improve our ranking by one to 14th seed. Now we have to wait for the final tournament rankings but it is a good seed to begin with.

Both teams now prepare for the WVC State Championship which is held this coming weekend in LaCrosse and hopefully can show some good performance top end this long season.

Statistics for all Varsity games are posted here as well as overall statistics for WVC here.

It's been a while since the last update and it was busy. The club held its first successful tournament and we congratulate the UWP Alumni team for taking home the cup. Thanks to all participating teams for coming and we hope you had a good time. All results can be found here.

Then varsity was scheduled for two WVC games, Friday before the tournament at home against Oshkosh, which the Titans took in three games. The Sunday game against UW-LaCrosse was canceled due to the snowstorm that hit us that weekend. A new date for that game has yet to be determined.

Last weekend the team travelled to Bloomington, Indiana for the Hoosier Illini Classic. With a much reinforced squad by players from the JV team the club decided to try out some new things and well we tried a lot. Overall it was a learning experience and we are looking forward to use the learned the upcoming weekend at the Hawkeye Spring Classics at Iowa City.

And again it proves that the WVC is a tough conference. The first rankings for the Division I teams was announced and four of the 25 teams play in the WVC with Oshkosh ranked as #1. Unfortunately Division II rankings are not out yet.

Feb. 11
A new week another game. Varsity played Carthage the past weekend but was not successful as they lost to Carthage's club team in three games. Nonetheless we are looking forward to this weekends competition as Varsity plays against the current national champion UW-Oshkosh on Friday at home and also have our first invitational tournament at home all day Saturday. And finally varsity travels to UW-LaCrosse on Sunday to play their re-match.

Schedule for this weekends tournament is posted here. Directions to the Fieldhouse can be found here.

Feb. 4
Again the past weekend was very play heavy. The JV team had its play date on Saturday at Lakeland college and varsity had another two home games on Sunday. This year the format for the play date changed from a tournament style to a all around play. We don't know how we were seeded that way but JV had 6 matches that day and no time to breath at all. We also had another edition of the Gresl vs. Gresl fight where Franklin went one for one on serves and aces, finishing the second game against Whitewater with an ace. The rallies of the day where when a hit was dug by Zach, deflected by Dan and finally also deflected by Tom to fly over the net and stay in game. All this happened in a split-second. The second noteworthy action was when Steve Knautz was hitting a one ball which got deflected by the block and in the same instance Steve dug that deflection with his head to again go over the net. At least it seems his head is not useless after all.

Sunday saw a nerve wrecking match against UW-LaCrosse, a team we didn't really had hope to win against, but the team effort and a pulling together by all players made the win for the day in a five game match. In the following match against UW-Stout our squad was somewhat tired on the court after the intense five game match before, but still managed to beat UW-Stout in 4 games. A first for all attending people was when the lights went out for 10 minutes in midgame versus LaCrosse.

Jan. 28
The past weekend was a mixed bag for the club. The JV team suffered from the long drive to NBBC during Sunday's game against UW-Stevens Point but had an overall successful appearance at NBBC, beating the Pioneers in four games. On Sunday varsity had an injury during their game against Lakeland and we have to see how this will turn out. Nonetheless Varsity held Lakeland to a close game but got defeated eventually. In their second game of the day, varsity played UW-SP beating them in three games. Also JV defeated UW-SP's B team in three games, but was far away from their best performance. We are looking forward to our first full week of practice and our games the next weekend.

After Winter break and one practice before the first match the team was traveling to UW-Whitewater to face the Warhawks A and B team. Their A-team didn't leave our squad much chance but our JV squad retaliated, beating UW-W JV team. We are now looking forward to a weekend full of matches while the JV team plays at NBBC this Saturday and Both teams play on Sunday at home. First Varsity will play against Lakeland College and then both teams play against UW-Stevens Point.

Jan. 24
Many things have happened since the last news. Everybody enjoyed their turkey day and was looking forward for the Iowa Tournament. Weather was rough that weekend with a blizzard, but eventually both teams made it there and back in one piece. Varsity lost their quarterfinal match against Minnesota A while JV beat Minnesota B in their first bracket play, eventually losing their quarterfinal game against Illinois C. The next weekend marked the WVC Kickoff Tournament at Carthage. Both teams were looking forward to meet their opponents for the next season, but pools were not seeded according to conference so both teams played teams from Division I and II as well as a mixed teams from Carthage's NCAA III team. Again we started out slow but showed in the end what we had gained so far this season and proved that we are a force to be reckoned with.

Nov. 19
The last two weekends were busy for both teams as we played at UW Eau Clair last weekend and at UW Stout the weekend before. Both teams were successful at Stout as the Varsity took 2nd, losing their only match to UW LaCrosse and the JV tied for 5th place out of 12 teams. Everybody is looking forward to get a weekend off and enjoy Turkey Day. On December 1st, both teams will travel to Ames, IA for the A-Town Throwdown. The following weekend, both teams will head to Carthage for the Pre-conference tournament. Our finish at Preconference should show us where we stand in our conference and what we need to improve on.

Oct. 26
Both team have busy weeks behind them and are preparing for their next tournament at NIU. The tournament at Marquette was a good weekend for both teams as we got to play the elite in the nation and didn't look to bad, especially JV had a hard pool with Marquette A and Lakeland A in their group. But also Varsity had Oskosh A in their group and matched them equally. The current performance of both teams give reason to believe, that we will look into a great year of volleyball. Results and stats are posted so take a look around and also don't forget to read the game reports by ours truely Franklin.

Oct. 08
The club will go to Madison on Saturday Oct. 13 and playing at the first annual Fall Classic Tournament. This will prove interesting as the kick-off for the fall and will be determing how well we are prepared. Seeds are not out yet but so far teams entered in the tournament are UW-Madison, Illinois State, UW-Eau Claire, Purdue, DePaul, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Whitewater. We are looking forward to play some good games and have fun doing so. More information is on the way so check back for results and game reports after the weekend.

The Pioneers have a great season to look forward to. Almost all players return to the team with the exception of Andy Miller, who as a senior graduates and won’t be able to play next season. Also two former starters won't return until spring semester, setter Ian Brown and Libero Dan Louchbaum will join the squad in spring again. But nonetheless new talents appear on the horizon, which should make this season very interesting.

The teams will be very busy this fall semester with overall seven tournaments to kick the season off. For more information check the schedule.

The Men's Volleyball Club practices each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 p.m. until midnight in the Gym at the Fieldhouse. If you have interest in competitive volleyball come to the Fieldhouse and join the fun.
