UWP goes into Coralville and Sweeps the Hawkeyes
The UWP Hockey Club went into Coralville, IA and won both games against the University of Iowa, and are now riding a 3 game winning streak.
Game 1- The Hawkeyes put in a loose puck in the first minute of the game to jump to an early 1-0 lead. Riley Zehner tied it at 1, but soon after Iowa regained the lead. Then with just 15 seconds left in the 1st period, Jeremey Denissen scored to tie it at 2 heading into the 2nd period. The Pioneers dominated the 2nd period as they got 2 goals from Jake Liedtke, a goal from Zehner, and a goal from Mark Schultz, while Iowa only got 1 goal in the 2nd. The Pioneers headed into the 3rd period with a 6-3 lead. Iowa came out strong in the 3rd as they scored 2 goals to make it 6-5, but then the high powered UWP offense scored goals from Zehner, Denissen, and Ethan Fish to give the Pioneers a 9-5 Victory. Goalie Mike Krueger made 27 saves to earn his first win of the season. UWP goals were assisted by Liedtke (2), Zehner (2), Fish (1), Aaron Frach (1), Landon Farber (1), and Kevin Ywanuskas (1).
Game 2- UWP took the early lead in game 2 as Jake Liedtke scored to make it 1-0. Iowa came back strong and scored 2 goals to make it 2-1 heading into the 2nd period. Jeremey Denissen scored quickly to tie it at 2. Riley Zehner scored to make the game 3-2. However with 12 seconds left, Iowa scored a powerplay goal to make it 3-3 heading into the 3rd period. The Pioneer defense held strong and goalie Jason Cebulski made a total of 42 saves as they shutout the Iowa offense in the 3rd. UWP got goals from Mark Schultz and Liedtke as the Pioneers won 5-3 and are now on a 3 game winning streak. The Pioneer goals were assisted by Liedtke (2), Schultz (2), Zehner (1), Brandon Kane (1), and Landon Farber (1).
Pioneers Get 3 out of 4 points from Toledo
The Pioneer Hockey Club welcomed the University of Toledo to town Friday and Saturday night in their home opener of the 2009-10 season.
Game 1 - UWP jumped out to an early lead, as Jake Liedtke scored a goal 7 minutes into the game. The Pioneers added 2 more goals as Kevin Ywanauskas and Riley Zehner scored to make it 3-0 at the end of the 1st period. UWP outshot Toledo 21-7 in the opening frame. University of Toledo came out firing in the 2nd period as they scored 3 goals to tie it at 3. Entering the 3rd period tied at 3-3, the Pioneers scored goals from Zehner and Jeremy Denissen to take a 5-3 lead with 8 minutes remaining. Toledo came back with 2 goals in 2 minutes to make it 5-5. The game remained tied at the end of the 3rd and went into the Overtime period. Freshman goalie Andrew Hornick came up huge in his first college start, as he made 40 saves on 45 shots, and didn't allow a goal in the 5 mintute overtime, so the game went to a 3 man shootout. Hornick and Toledo's netminder both made the save on the first 2 shots. However, Toledo's 3rd shooter picked the top right corner and hit his mark giving University of Toledo a 1-0 lead in the shootout. UWP could not answer with a goal and University of Toledo came out with a 6-5 Shootout victory Friday night. UWP goals were assisted by Landen Farber (3),Kevin Nolen (1), Brandon Kane (1), Tony Schultz (1), Ywanauskas (1), and Zehner (1).
Game 2- UWP again jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Kevin Nolen, Jeremy Denissen, and Zach Yakaites. Toledo countered with a goal with 30 seconds left in the first period to make 3-1 at the end of the period. Toledo scored on a penalty shot to make it 3-2 in the 2nd. Jake Liedtke answered with a goal of his own to make it 4-2 heading into the 3rd. Toledo scored early to make it 4-3. Platteville's defense held strong and did not allow a goal after that, as junior netminder Jason Cebulski made 52 saves on 55 shots. The UWP penatly kill squad stood strong as Toledo went 0 for 7 on the powerplay. Pioneers added goals from Landon Farber, and two from Riley Zehner to make it 7-3. The UWP Hockey Club got their first win of the season. The Pioneer's goals on Saturday night were assisted by Tony Schultz (2), Mark Schultz (2), Aaron Frach (2), Brandon Kane (1), Nick Tremain (1), Jeremy Denissen (1), and Riley Zehner (1).
HOME OPENER Oct 9th and 10th!
The Pioneers come home after a rough road start to their season. Come Support the UWP Hockey team Oct 9th and Oct 10th both at 8pm and are at the "SLICE" Ice arena in Monroe, WI.
Madison is UWP's First Series
The First Series is set in Madison for The Pioneers vs The Badgers, The dates are set for September 18th at 7:30pm and 19th at 5:00pm both are at the Hartmeyer Center in Madison, Come out and support your Pioneers in the exciting season opener!
Pioneers Gear up for 09-10 season
The UWP hockey club is getting ready for the upcoming season. They look follow up thier best season in team history at 14-8-1 last season. The tenitive schedule is up and any incoming players interested in playing contact any of the board memebers via email.
