Minutes for October 21, 1999

The meeting was called to order by President Erin Rischette at 4:02 PM.

1.  Announcements
    SPS received the outstanding chapter award again this year.  
    The chancellor sent a congratulations note!

2.  Approval of Minutes from October 7
    A. The physics is Phar-Out presentation was in the town of 
       Potosi.

3.  Treasurer's Report: $150 deposit, all checks should be in 
    bank.

4.  Committee Reports
    A.  Physics is Phar-Out
        i.   The presentation for Potosi went well. There were 
             two shows, and we received thank you's from the  
             teachers and students.
        ii.  There will be 2 shows Wednesday, November 17 at 
             O.E. Gray Elementary school in Platteville.  
             Presentation for 3&4 grade students - there should 
             be about 40 students! If you plan to attend, meet 
             at 12 in room 205 Otts. We should return around 
             2:30 PM.
        iii. Belmont Middle school has expressed an interest in 
             having SPS visit them!
        iv.  It was suggested that a tutorial be presented to 
             SPS members so that they could better help out 
             with Physics is Phar-Out presentations. That  
             presentation will be after the next meeting, 
             November 4.\
    B.  Colloquium
        i.   Dr. Thorson presented - good presentation! Great 
             attendance! Thanks to all who came!
        ii.  Thanks for the spatula! :)
    C.  Trip/Social
        i.   Canoeing the weekend of October 29. Check e-mail 
             for details!
        ii.  November 6 we will be touring Genoa Nuclear Plant. 
             There is a limit on the number of people that can 
             go, of you want to go, sign up quick! Leaving 
             about 9 AM from behind Otts and should return  
             about 2 PM.
        iii. The Christmas social will be December 3. Cookies 
             of all kinds and possibly breadsticks will be made 
             on Thursday starting at 1 PM.
    D.  Bulletin Board - check the board to find out what's 
        going on!

5.  There were two different proposal ideas for the Marsh White 
    Award.
    A.  More equipment for Physics is Phar-Out
    B.  A Saturday workshop for kids to learn about Phyisics
    Adam moved to write a proposal on the workshop idea, 
    seconded by Jill.  The motion was passed.

6.  There were also two proposals to consider for canoe    
    building.
    A.  Get a special topics course on Design and Construction
    B.  Build three, sell one to make up the cost
    Chris moved to try to get a special topics course, but if 
    the course does not go through to have further discussion.
    The motion was seconded by Travis.  The motion was passed.

7.  Alumni Committee meeting next week.

8.  Other
    A.  SPS will soon have a map of caves near the area!
    B.  Karen Anderson (Community Service) might be able to 
        help us out with funding for our Saturday Physics 
        workshop!
