Minutes for October 7, 1999 The meeting was called to order by President Erin Rischette at 4:05 PM. 1. Announcements A. Make sure you fill out a class schedule and return it to Prof. Wilson! B. If you recieve a renewal for National SPS, throw it out! C. Friday, October 8th is a cookie bake! Make cat poop cookies! D. Saturday trip to Genoa is cancelled! They are moving a 63kV transformer that day and cannot have visitors. 2. The minutes from September 30th were approved as written. 3. Treasurer's Report A. Approximately $20 was spent on stuff for the cookie bake. 4. Committee Reports A. Physics is Phar-Out i. Many thanks to Travis, Mark and Jessica for a successful trip. ii. The next trip is Monday, October 11 to Platosi. The shows will be presented at 8:15 and 9:15. Please meet in 205 Otts at 7:30 AM if you are coming! B. Colloquium i. October 8th there will be a presentation by Mark Thorson, a friend of Hal Evensen from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. There will be a cookie bake before hand, starting at 2 PM in 205 Otts. Please get your friends to attend! C. Trip/Social i. Stargazing: see the lighting of the M through a telescope! Saturday, October 9th starting around 9 PM, meet in 205 Otts. ii. There will be a caving event at a place a little south of Dubuque. The map that we had last year left with one of the graduating students, so if you have caving ideas, please mention them at the next meeting. iii. Any suggestions are welcome! A suggestion from the meeting was a visit to Argon. D. Bulletin Board - no report. 5. Marsh White Award A. It is again time to apply for the Marsh White Award. It is recommended that we apply for something of approximately $60 - $100 value. Ideas? B. The applications are due November 15th. C. The idea we applied for last year was too dangerous! 6. Undergraduate Research Award A. SPS should apply! Ideas? B. If we receive the award, our SPS Chapter will have a section published in the journal! C. Applications are due November 15th. 7. Alumni Committee will need to send out a letter soon! Travis will be sending out ideas for times and dates to get together. 8. SUFAC A. If SPS wants money from SUFAC, we need to have something that will follow their guidelines in order to recieve money from them. B. Meetings for SUFAC are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week at 5pm. 9. Professor Wilson presented the results of his research on canoe making. He estimated some costs and different ideas about shape and type of wood to be used. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 pm.
