Minutes of May 6, 1999 The meeting was called to order by President Erin Rischette at 4:08 PM. 1. Announcements: A. First meeting of the new school year (99-00) will be September 2nd. B. Congratulations to graduating seniors Sean and Aaron - graduating May 8th! C. Congratulations and Happy Retirement to Dr. Dolmann! There will be a reception for Dr. D Wednesday, May 12, in room 205 Otts from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Please attend! D. Congratulations to those students going on Coop next semester! 2. The minutes of 4/15/99 were approved as written. 3. Treasurer's Report: All checks should be in the bank by Monday. A deposit was made in the SPS account... SPS remains in good standing. 4. Committee Reports A. Physics is Phantastic: No plans for the end of this semester. B. New name for next year will be "Physics is Phar Out." Colloquium: Suggestions: Dr. Hamilton (walking tour), Mark Rank, John Frigo Trip/Social: A. Stargazing took place April 23rd... was a success. B. The Spring Social was also April 23rd and was fun! C. Canoe trip Sat. April 24th was the biggest ever, but one leak was discovered. D. A suggestion for next semester was ultimate frisbee. E. Be thinking about Dairy Days for next semester! F. Special thanks to Prof. Wilson and Mrs. Wilson for all of the participation and time they have contributed to SPS. G. The fall Pizza Party will take place September 25th. H. A recruitment committee with five member who will promote SPS involvement for next fall was formed. Bulletin Board: Suggestions: new colorful backgrounds! 5. Ballots - Zone Councilor, Associate Zone Councilor, and SPS President: Prof. Dolmann moved to send three anonymous ballots voting for Erin Rischette as Associate Zone Councilor, Prof. Wilson as Zone Councilor and Gary White as SPS President. The motion passed. 6. Name of the SPS Scholarship: Prof. Wilson moved that the scholarship be named the Fred Dolman SPS scholarship in honor of Prof. Fred Dolmann, physics professor former SPS advisor. Seconded by Travis Norling. 7. Lab Manuals: SPS is a beneficiary of the Lab Manual Account. This account provides most of the funds for the trips, social events and activities in which SPS participates. However, this account is being terminated. Prof. Wilson had hoped to prepare and sell the Lab Manuals through SPS, but this cannot be done. Prof. Wilson and Adam Dregar plan to research forming a non-profit organization whose sole purpose was to support SPS through the selling of Lab Manuals, using proper copyright, etc. Adam is helping. 8. Checking Account: There is some difficulty currently paying for university functions. A suggestion was made that SPS create a checking account for activities involving the university. Could be used for other things as well. Travis Norling moved to look into this idea. 2nded by Greg. 9. Recognition: SPS received recognition at the awards ceremony. Prof. Wilson also received recognition as outstanding advisor. A motion to adjourn was made at 4:53 PM.
