Minutes for March 23, 2000 The meeting was called to order by President Erin Jo Rischette at 4:01 PM. 1. Announcements A. Do you want to hold an office in SPS? Nominations will be held April 6th. You can nominate yourself! B. New SPS Positions Do we want a new office of Historian for the 2000-2001 year? Historian would be responsible for photos at event and the SPS photo album. A motion was made by Mark Bertolosi and seconded by Jason Fingerson to make the Vice President also hold the title of "Historian," and to make the Treasurer hold the Alumni Secretary position. Treasurer does not need to be a member of Sigma Pi Sigma to be Alumni Sectretary. The motion passed unanomously. C. Associate Zone Councilor Position The Associate Zone Councilor position is open for next year. We recieved an extention on the due date, however Erin needs to turn in nominations! Let Erin know if you are interested by the end of the meeting! As Associate Zone Councilor, you i. Get a free trip to Washington D.C, a. Tours of the Capitol b. Tours of museums ii. Go to College Park, Maryland to represent all SPS groups and students in our zone. iii. Are a mediator between students and National SPS. You would be responsible for voting for the good of zone. No one else has been nominated yet. D. Zone Meeting - UIC Erin and Travis are the only ones going so far. A motion was made to pay registration fee of $10. The meeting is April 7&8. If you are interested in attending, let Erin know ASAP! E. Sigma Pi Sigma There will be 8 new inductees to Sigma Pi Sigma at the dinner tonight! Congratulations! F. Fermi Lab Pictures are in the digital camera with Brian. 2. Approval of Minutes The minutes from the March 2 meeting were approved as written. 3. Committee Reports A. Physics is Phar-Out Past shows: i. The Platteville Middle School show on March 10th went well. Thanks to Mark Broker. ii. The show in Livingston on March 10th also went well. They had a very cool presentation room. Thank you to Mark and Lucas. iii. On March 16th there was a show in Fredonia. Lucas came to help (thanks!). The 5th grade went well, but the 4th graders were a little noisy. Each of the students wrote apologies for their behaviors- some were very funny! iv. We recieved a packet of thank you letters from St. Mary's in Bloomington. "Keep up the good work!" Coming up: i. On Tuesday, April 11th there will be a show starting at 12 noon. Meet in 205 Otts at 11. We should return about 3:30 PM. There will be three shows, all of them for 5th graders. ii. On Tuesday, April 18th, we will put on a show for Audobon school in Dubuque for 4th - 6th graders. Meet at 10:45 AM, show will start at noon. We should return about 4 PM. Start thinking about new "Physics is Phar-Out" name. How about "Physics is Phabulous"? B. Colloquium Dr. Hamilton has consented to present a colloquium April 13 at 4:30 PM on Non-Linear Optics. C. Trip/Social i. Canoe Trip How's Friday afternoon? Next week - leave right after Expo. ii. Chicago Trip April 8th, attend the zone meeting and then Aquarium, Sears tower and/or Planetarium. D. Bulletin Board There should be a new BB tomorrow - check it out! 5. Physics is Phar-Out Workshop Cancelled due to lack of attendance. We had a total of 9 responses. The money from Marsh White will go to doing workshops during school visits, which will still qualify as putting on workshops. Committee to present ideas. 6. Expo! Expo is next Friday from 10-2!
