Minutes for March 2, 2000

The meeting was called to order by President Erin Jo Rischette at 4:02 PM.

1.  Announcements
    A.  Reminder: SPS scholarships are due March 15th! 
    B.  Please take time to fill out a census.
    C.  REU application deadlines are passing quickly - make sure 
        you apply soon!
    D.  Congratulations to Jessica on her position at the 
        observatory in Arizona!
    E.  Sigma Pi Sigma banquet is March 23rd.  Invites should 
        arrive soon.
    F.  There will be an SPS meeting March 23rd because of spring 
        break.

2.  Approval of Minutes from February 17th.

3.  Treasurer's Report
    No report.

4.  Committee Reports
    A.  Physics is Phar-Out
        i.   There was a show this morning.  Went well, had some               
             very strange questions.  There were about 35 kids, 
             and the show lasted about 2 hours! Thanks to Lucas 
             and Adam.
        ii.  Friday, March 10 there will be two shows at 
             Platteville Middle School, 8:30 AM & 9:30 AM.  Meet 
             in 205 Otts at 8:00 AM.   
        iii. Friday, March 10 there will also be a show in 
             Livingston.  The show will start at 1:00 PM, please 
             meet in 205 Otts at 12:20 PM.  We should return 
             around 4:30 PM.  
        iv.  Tuesday, March 21, we will put on two shows for 
             Fulton school in Dubuque.  These are 5th grade kids, 
             the shows will be at 1:45 and 2:30 PM.  Meet in 205 
             Otts at 12:30 PM.
        v.   Tuesday, April 11 there will be three shows in 
             Mineral Point for 5th grade students.  We'll be              
             starting at noon, meeting 205 Otts at 11:00 AM.
    B.  Colloquium
        Next week Mark Broker will be presenting a colloquium on 
        his Coop! 4 PM, Thursday, March 9th, in room 205 Otts.
    C.  Trip/Social
        Fermi Lab was a great trip!  Met up with the group from 
        Purdue, who had arrived an hour early because they forgot 
        about time change. :) It was great tour, lots of 
        details... Fermi Lab works with experimental cancer 
        treatment! Took some cool pictures, too.
    D.  Bulletin Board
        No report.

5.  Physics is Phar-Out Workshop
    A.  Where is the money going to come from? $5 from each 
        child.  Major cost will be food and T-shirts.  Possibly  
        get some funding from department? No news on national 
        funding yet.
    B.  Showed the T-shirt design. It is going to be sent in 
        soon!
    C.  Rooms are reserved.

6.  Canoes
    The canoes are looking good!! They are actually starting to 
    look like canoes!! Come see and help out, Saturday, pretty 
    much all day!

7.  Expo
    Please sign up to help!  Lots of fun, everyone can be 
    involved!  You'll see a huge Telsa coil, possibly 5-8 ft 
    sparks, and much, much more! Expo is March 31st.
