Minutes for February 17, 2000 The meeting was called to order by President Erin Jo Rischette at 4:04 pm. 1. Announcements A. SPS scholarship deadline moved to March 15th. 1st place $4000, 2nd place $2000, and 10 $1000 scholarships. Must be a junior in physics, EP or education with physics major. B. SPS has been invited to judge the Holy Ghost Science Fair next Tuesday. We will be leaving around ten to 1 and return about 2:30 pm. Meet in back of Otts. C. The Sigma Pi Sigma reception and banquet will be March 23rd. It is an honor to be in Sigma Pi Sigma, and there is very little time involved. Invites to join have been sent out, please respond either way. 2. Approval of Minutes from February 3rd. 4.C.ii. Purdue, not "Perdu." Minutes were approved with correction. 3. Treasurer's Report SPS is now in good standing. 4. Committee Reports A. Physics is Phar-Out i. There was a show February 10th at St. Mary's. It went well. Thank you to Lucas for helping. ii. We need a Community Service Representative. This person would write up a report of community service in SPS. B. Colloquium The walking tour was last week. It was a good show, lots of interesting and fun stuff. Photonics lab, lots of equipment that was gotten at a very reasonable price. UWP does alpha and beta testing. We may do this tour once per semester. Interested in research opps? Talk to Dr. Hamilton. This could be an opportunity to get the SPS undergraduate research award! C. Trip/Social We're going to Fermi Lab! February 26th, next Saturday. We'll be getting a personal tour with some people that used to work there, so this tour will be special! Talk to Prof. Wilson to sign up. Meet Saturday behind Otts at 7 am. D. Bulletin Board Look for scholarship information! 5. Physics is Phar-out Workshop Mark Bertolasi has been calling schools all afternoon. We actually have one response saying yes! Many schools seem enthusiastic. 6. Canoe Report Two canoe molds are made and ready to go! Stripping going on this weekend, Friday starting at 3 and Saturday 8 till ??? 7. Expo Expo is March 31st. Last year's Expo was a lot of fun! Get involved this year. Thursday evening we're tearing apart the Physics lab and setting up the "Physics Exploritorium!" We need a committee to plan setup, staffing and cleanup! 8. T-Shirts SPS T-Shirts are available for $10! Talk to Prof. Wilson if interested. 9. Webpage The SPS Webpage needs some updating. Geoff volunteered to work on it! Thanks Geoff!
