The current version of Thunderbird can be downloaded from Mozilla's website . Download the installer and launch it. You will be presented with the following screen:

Installation

Click "Next" to continue...

Choose Setup Options

Click "Next" to continue...

Installation Summary

Click "Install" to continue...

Thunderbird, will now finish installing.

Installation Finished

If you wish to configure Thunderbird at this time, leave a check in the box marked "Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now"
and click "Finish" to complete the installation.



Initial account configuration for Thunderbird


A prompt to setup a mail account will appear the first time Thunderbird 3 opens.

Mail Account Setup - name

Enter your full name in the "Your Name" field.
Then enter your email address in the "Email Address" field.
Click "Continue" to continue...

Auto-detect account settings

Wait while Thunderbird attempts to configure mail server settings.

Thunderbird will fail to find the correct settings for your email account.

Provide the correct "Incoming" information. Change:
    mail.uwplatt.edu to zimbra.uwplatt.edu
    POP to IMAP
    110 to 993
    None to SSL/TLS
Click"Re-test Configuration" to verify the new settings...

Account Wizard - Create Account

Verify Incoming information is zimbra.uwplatt.edu, IMAP, 993, and SSL/TLS. Click Create Account.



Enable outgoing mail authentication for Thunderbird



Accounts

Click on Tools then Account Settings
You will be presented with the following screen:

Click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) account then click Edit

Within the SMTP Server window make sure Server Name is "smtp.uwplatt.edu" and Port is "25"

Also make sure that Connection security is set to "STARTTLS".


Configuring Connection Security in Thunderbird (incoming mail)




SSL

To setup connection security, please select Tools then select Account Settings
In the "Server Settings" on the left hand side of the window, then select "SSL/TLS" under Security Settings, Connection Security.


Configuring the Campus Address Book in Thunderbird




Account Settings

To setup the UW Platteville Address Book, select "Composition and Addressing" from the left-hand menu. On the right hand side select the button for " Use a different LDAP server".

Then click the " Edit Directories" button.

Add LDAP servers

Click " Add"...



LDAP Directory Servers


At this screen enter in the name for the address book.
"UWPlatteville LDAP" (without quotes) is fine.
Enter "zimbra.uwplatt.edu" (without quotes) in the "Hostname" field.



Subscribing to IMAP Folders


You must subscribe to your folders on the email server if you have more than an inbox folder.

Right click on your Account Name and go to subscribe.

Select all the folder you want to have access. You also have to check sub-folders of folders.

After you have selected all the folder you want to have access to click "Subscribe".

Click "OK" to finish the process.

Now your finished installing and configuring Thunderbird.
