Open Outlook Express 6. If this is the first time Outlook Express 6 has
been used you might be prompted to set up an account. If so, close the
Internet Connection Wizard window.
From the "Tools" menu, select "Accounts"...
From the "Add" drop down menu in the "Internet Accounts" window, select "Mail..."
Enter your full name in the "Display name" field and click on "Next"...
Enter your e-mail address in the "E-mail address" field and click on "Next"...
Select either POP or IMAP server as your incoming mail server. The difference between the two can be found here.
If you selected IMAP, enter "imap.nw.uwplatt.edu" (without the quotes)
in the incoming mail server field, otherwise enter "pop.nw.uwplatt.edu"
(without the quotes) in the field.
Enter "smtp.nw.uwplatt.edu" (without the quotes) in the outgoing mail server field.
Click "Next"...
Enter your UW-Platteville NetID in the "Account name" field...
Do not enter your password at this point and do not check the "Remember password" box.
Click "Next"...
Click "Finish". You are now done with the basic configuration of the Outlook Express e-mail client.
Configuring SMTP authentication for Outlook Express
To enable authentication for outgoing mail in Outlook Express:
Open Outlook Express
Select Accounts... from the Tools menu.
Click on the imap.nw.uwplatt.edu account then click on the Properties button.
Click on the Servers tab.
Check My server requires authentication under Outgoing Mail Server
(In Settings..., leave the default as Use the same settings as my incoming mail server)
Click "Apply". You are now done configuring SMTP authentication in your Outlook Express e-mail client.
To setup Outlook Express in a secure mode (required for sending e-mail from off campus or on the uwpwireless network), select the Advanced tab.
Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both the Outgoing (SMTP) and Incoming (IMAP) mail servers. You will also need to change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port from 25 to 465. Finally, verify the Incoming mail (IMAP) port is set to 993.
Configuring the Campus Address Book in Outlook Express
The following steps will configure Outlook Express with the campus
directory service. This will allow the client to search for other
users' e-mail addresses in the campus directory.
From the "Add" drop down menu in the "Internet Accounts" window, select "Directory Service..."
Enter "ldap.nw.uwplatt.edu" in the "Internet directory server" field and click "Next"...
Select "Yes" and click "Next"...
Click on "Finish" then click "Close" to close the Internet Accounts window.
