This document describes how to configure a PPP client for Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. Once completed you will be able to connect to the campus network from a remote location using a modem and a regular telephone line.

NOTE - Login to your workstation using the Administrator account or equivalent. If you do not do so you may not be able to see or configure a Network Connection.

These instructions assume you are using the default Windows XP window and menu layout. Steps for the classic layout are also provided where relevant.

STEP 1: Open New Connection Wizard

STEP 2: Choose Network Connection Type

The New Connection Wizard will start to assist you with your configuration.

Again, depending on whether or not you have setup previous Network Connection sessions, you may see the following screen:



What you do next depends on your particular setup. These instructions assume that you have no other Internet Service Provider setup (such as America Online).
You should now see a screen like the one below:

STEP 3: Configure Dial-Up Settings

You will now see the following screen. It will start guiding you through the final configuration steps.

If all goes well, you should see the screen below, indicating that your Network Connection configuration was successfully completed.

STEP 4: Test the Network Connection

To verify the dial-up configuration:
Your computer will now try to establish a connection with the UW-Platteville modem pool. If you connect successfully, you will see this icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen (the system tray):


To disconnect from the UW-Platteville modem pool, double-click on this icon. You will then see a screen like:


You can then click "Disconnect" to disconnect from the campus.



Optional software can be downloaded from the UW-Platteville software download page. You will need to use your eDirectory password to log in.
