UW-Platteville has licensed Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAV CE) from Symantec, Inc. This license allows the University to install the SAV CE server and client
components on 4500 computers. This number represents all
University-owned computers, along with personal computers of students,
faculty and staff.
SAV CE can only be installed on personal computers of current UW-Platteville students, faculty, and staff.
When a student, faculty, or staff member is no longer enrolled or
employed at UW-Platteville, the SAV CE client must be removed.
The SAV CE client includes all of the functionality of Symantec's
consumer product, Norton AntiVirus 2005. The advantage of Corporate
Edition is that this client does not have the expiration date and includes free virus definition updates for the lifetime of the client.
The current version of SAV CE for Windows 2000/XP is: 10.1.5.5000
Requirements
Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP
Memory: 64 MB RAM
Managed vs. Unmanaged
The SAV CE client for Windows can be installed as a Managed or Unmanaged client.
Managed Client
The SAV CE Managed client should be used on all University-owned Windows computers. The SAV CE Managed client is setup to automatically receive client settings and virus definition updates from
a UW-Platteville SAV CE parent server.
Unmanaged Client
The SAV CE Unmanaged client should be used on the following systems:
- Home computers of UW-Platteville faculty and staff.
- Personal computers of UW-Platteville students, including students in ResNet.
The Unmanaged client does not automatically
receive updates from the UW-Platteville SAV CE server. Instead, virus
definition updates from the Internet can be scheduled via LiveUpdate.
Installing the SAV CE Managed client
Symantec AntiVirus CE is automatically installed by the ZenWorks Management Agent on University owned workstations. The installer for the managed client is also available in NAL
for all UW-Platteville IT Support staff. This installer is configured
to automatically install the SAV CE client with the proper settings for
a managed client.
If you find a University-owned system that is not running the current version of the SAV CE client, please notify the OIT Help Desk.
Installing the SAV CE Unmanaged client
Items you need to know before you begin:
- The installation process will vary slightly based on the version of Windows you are using.
- Do not install SAV CE on a computer with another anti-virus client installed.
- Installing the SAV CE client on a computer with a previous version
of Norton AntiVirus installed will properly remove the previous version
and install SAV CE.
- If you believe you may have a virus on your computer, it is a good idea to visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run the free scan to remove any viruses from your computer before you install Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
