Windows users who wish to print to a shared network printer first need to add the printer to Windows. The instructions for adding a network printer to Windows are slightly different depending on the version of Windows you are using.
Before you begin you will need to know the following:
Printing rights
Printers located in computer labs are typically available to all faculty, staff, and students.
Printers located in departments and offices are usually restricted to allow only specific users or groups access to print. If you do not have access to a printer you believe you should have access to, please contact the OIT Help Desk.
How to add a network printer:
1. First, open the Printers control panel by choosing Start > Settings > Printers.
2. Select Add Printer and you will start the Add Printer Wizard. Select Next until you see the window that asks if the printer is a Local or Network Printer.
3. Select Network Printer and press Next. The next window will ask you to locate the printer on the network. Select either Next (Windows 2000/XP) or Browse (Windows 98) to find the printer. You should see the following window:
Windows 2000/XP:
Windows 98:
All network printers should have a label on them that lists the name of the print queue. In most cases, the name of the printer is the building abbreviation followed by the room number. For example, BOE104 is located in room 104 of Boebel Hall. Some examples:
KAR444.Campus.UWPlatt
BOE104.Labs.UWPlatt
TOW419.Campus.UWPlatt
4. Once you know the name of the printer you would like to add, you can browse the network to find the printer. You will need to read the printer name from right to left in order to browse to its location.
Windows 2000/XP:
To add the printer BOE104.Labs.UWPlatt, select NDPS Printers > NDPS Controlled Printers > UWPlatt > UWPlatt > Labs, and finally the printer BOE104. This will add the NDPS printer and will automatically download the appropriate printer driver.
Windows 98:
To add the printer BOE104.Labs.UWPlatt, select UWPlatt > UWPlatt > Labs, and finally the printer BOE104. This will add the NDPS printer and will automatically download the appropriate printer driver.
Note: If you have selected a NDPS printer that does not have the printer drivers installed on the server, you will be asked to select the printer type and install the printer drivers. These drivers may be available on your Windows CD-ROM, or in the Pub Directory. You can also download printer drivers from the printer manufacturers web site.
5. The last window that you will see will ask you if you would like this printer to be the default printer.
Select either Yes or No and choose Next.
You should now receive a confirmation window that states that you have successfully added this printer.
How to remove a network printer:
To remove a network printer from Windows, simply open the printers control panel (Start > Settings > Printers), right-click on the printer you wish to remove, and select Delete.
