What does the UW-Platteville Spam Firewall do?

The UW-Platteville Spam Firewall is a set of server appliances designed to sanitize e-mail. The Spam Firewall system screens all incoming e-mail destined for uwplatt.edu and checks it for viruses, worms, and spam-like e-mail before it is delivered to the UWP NetMail system.

Messages that contain viruses, are clearly determined to be spam, contain suspect URLs, or contain banned attachment types will quarantined. Messages will remain in the quarantine for 30 days and will be automatically deleted if no action is taken on them.

What is the spam quarantine?

By default, you will receive a weekly e-mail message from the UW-Platteville Spam Firewall if you have new messages in your quarantine. The message will contain a list of the new quarantined messages and a link to manage your quarantine as well as links that allow you to manage each spam message.

Detailed directions for managing your Spam Quarantine can be found at Spam Quarantine Options.

When a message is in your quarantine you have several options for managing the message:
  1. Release - This will release the message from quarantine and deliver this message to your e-mail inbox.
  2. Allow - This will allow e-mail from the sender so that you will always receive messages from this sender.
  3. Block - This will block e-mail from the sender so that you will not receive messages from this sender.
  4. Delete - This will delete the message from your quarantine.
  5. Do nothing - If you do nothing with a message in your quarantine it will automatically be removed after 30 days.
Note: If the message contains a virus or blocked attachment your options for management of the message will be limited.

You can check your quarantine at any time by choosing Check My Quarantine in the left menu on the E-mail @ UW-Platteville page. You will need to login to the UW-Platteville Spam Firewall using your UW-Platteville NetID and password.
